The FA Cup winners have had a strong summer already bringing in four new faces most notably of course the Chilean forward Alexis Sanchez from Barcelona, but one of the more weaker positions within the Arsenal squad remains at defensive midfield.

Of course they have got players in that position such as Mathieu Flamini and Mikel Arteta but it seems quite clear that a stronger and better player is needed to anchor the midfield if Arsenal are going to challenge at the very top this season.

Arsenal were heavily linked with Sami Khedira all summer but it looks as though that deal won't happen with Gunners boss Arsene Wenger saying in a press conference that the club "were never close to signing him"

Whilst it looks as though the Khedira deal is dead in the water, who else could Wenger turn to?

William Carvalho - The young Portuguese player is shining bright in the Premiera Liga for Sporting Lisbon and has all the ability to become a future star, was linked with Manchester United earlier in the summer and now speculation that a move to the Emirates isn't out of the question although the £37m price-tag may put Wenger off.

Javi Martinez - It would fit in perfectly with the needs that Arsenal have currently, short at centre-back and in the defensive midfield position, Martinez can play either position with ease, at 25 he is a player entering his prime and with the quality at Bayern Munich being so high, he may find himself looking for first-team football soon.

Lars Bender - The Gunners may not have been able to attract one German defensive midfielder to the club, but Bender may be different, outstanding at Bayer Leverkusen and would be a top addition should he swap the Bundesliga for the Premier League.

It remains to be seen whether Wenger will bring in a defensive midfield player before the transfer window slams shut, with his main focus being on a centre-back it may be that Arsenal fans will have to wait a bit longer to see the gap covered.
