This week rumours have resurfaced about ex-Arsenal player Lassana Diarra, who is reportedly on the verge of a move to Tottenham Hotspur. The Frenchman, who also had spells at Chelsea and Real Madrid, had a six month stint at Arsenal before moving to Portsmouth, but what happened to him since and were Arsenal right to let him go?

Lassana Diarra moved to Arsenal from Chelsea on deadline day 2007. He had 2 years at Stamford Bridge where he played in defensive midfield and at some points right back. He made 17 league appearances and played in Chelsea's 2007 League Cup final win. He joined Arsenal trying to rebuild his career, after not having been given many opportunities at Chelsea. His spell lasted just 6 months and he departed Arsenal in the January transfer window.

The next step, on what is quite a long career path, was Portsmouth. Pompey, who were being managed by Harry Redknapp at the time, where a team full of good players, who had played for big clubs but hadn't really shown their full potential. Lassana was just added to that list. He played every minute of Portsmouth's wining FA Cup run, including the final. 6 months after winning the cup, and after a string of impressive displays, he agreed a move to Spanish Giants Real Madrid. He broke into he first team quickly and at the end of his first season with Los Blancos, he was name in La Liga's breakthrough team of the season. He fell down the pecking order at Real Madrid, despite being given early chance by new manger Jose Mourinho. In 2011, he won the title with Real, but he left at the end of that season.

He joined Anzhi Makhachkala on deadline day 2012 but his stay was short lived. A year later he moved to Lokomotiv Moscow. Despite being sent off twice in his first few matches, he held down a spot in the Lokomotiv first team. Lassana Diarra left Lokomotiv in 2014 after a reported training ground bust up with the manager. He is currently a costless agent, but has been linked to Marseille, Spurs, Celtic and, surprisingly, a move to rejoin Arsenal.

Despite playing for a range of high profile clubs since leaving Arsenal, he has failed to hold down starting places and has had trouble with some of his managers. He was, and is, still a talented player, but Arsenal wasn't the right club for him and he wasn't the right player for Arsenal. So maybe Arsene Wenger was right to let him go.
