The Gunners' season did not start out according to plan. They experienced some massive injuries, including some to the likes of Mesut Ozil, Aaron Ramsey, Danny Welbeck and Jack Wilshere. Arsenal’s big-money summer signing Alexis Sanchez was the only real bright spot for the Gunners. In the middle of the season, they finally picked up form. From February and through March, Arsenal won eight straight contests in the league. With the return of Ozil, who possibly sparked this run, the Gunners looked like serious title contenders. Now that Chelsea have already locked up the league, it is time to start thinking about next year. Arsenal already have a very strong side, but they do need to improve in some major areas to become the victors of the Premiership next season.

Arsene Wenger needs to use the transfer window to purchase a world class striker. Yes, Olivier Giroud and Danny Welbeck are both quality strikers but neither are world class. Giroud has been very solid for a good portion of the season. He went through moments of incredible form and also moments of atrocious form. Arsenal needs consistency on their side that they have not received that from Giroud. Welbeck has not been given much of a chance. He was injured in the beginning of the season and when he returned, Giroud picked up incredible form and did not let his own place in the team slip. Some rumors have been swirling around Real Madrid striker Karim Benzema to be out of the Bernebaeu and into the Emirates, but those talks seem unlikely. Two strikers head the list to best suit the Gunners, Alexandre Lacazette and Gonzalo Higuain.

Lacazette has had a phenomenal season at Lyon and for a while was the only thing keeping his club at the top of the table in Ligue 1. Lacazette has 31 goals in 37 matches for Lyon, and has also provided six assists. There would be a sizable price tag for the French attacker, but at the young age of 23, Lacazette would be well worth it.

Higuain on the other hand, has proven himself in La Liga and in the Serie A. He was solid with Los Blancos, but this season at Napoli he has been fantastic. Higuain, has scored 25 goals for Napoli in 40 contests, but he also has shared the wealth a good amount, recording ten assists. Napoli are also not having a great season, so it would not be shocking if the Argentinean wanted out of the club for a move to a bigger club.

Both of these prolific strikers are large possibilities for the Gunners to bring in. Wenger also needs to use his budget to bring in another defender. The two full-backs, Monreal and Bellerin, have been magnificent this season. Laurent Koscielny has also been solid at the back. The other centre-back position needs to be changed. Per Mertersacker is simply not getting the job done. He almost single handedly eliminated Arsenal from the Champions League. Arsene Wenger did very well to bring in Brazilian centre-back Gabriel Paulista, but Wenger clearly favors Mertersacker, as Gabriel has only started three Premier League games this season. Rafael Varane and Fabian Schar are two very viable options for the French manager.

Real Madrid centre-back Rafael Varane has played well so far this season. He has not played a lot because in the beginning of the season Los Blancos manager Carlo Ancelotti favored Pepe. Lately, Varane has had an extended run in the team, getting the start over Pepe in the Champions League semi-final against Juventus. Varane is not going to be cheap, mainly because he is a very solid player at the back and is only 22-years-old. He would be a very good replacement for Mertersacker in the summer.

Fabian Schar is not very well known, but he has world class potential. The Gunners could even pick him up for under £10m. The Swiss centre-back has had a low-key season in the Swiss Super League but he is a rock at the back. Schar had the most successful challenge rate in the Champions League. He could become an elite centre back in England's first division, while he may not live up to his potential in the Swiss League. Arsenal already have the quality to win the Premiership, but if Wenger can manage to bring in one of these signings, it can definitely up their chances.

Arsenal have conceded the league title to Chelsea in 2015 but come next season, who knows what the Gunners' limits will be?
