Arsenal have been linked with the defensive midfielder from Sporting Lisbon since last summer, and are interested in including Joel Campbell in a deal which would see the Portuguese powerhouse join the Gunners, according to reports.

Interest in Carvalho has been long term and, with Arsenal looking to build up their squad for a title challenge next season, this could be one player that Arsene Wenger is looking to add early on.

Campbell, currently on loan at Villarreal in La Liga, has failed to establish a first team spot in the squad despite having an eye catching performance at the World Cup.

Campbell has been with Arsenal since 2011 and has been loaned out to four clubs in that time, only making four league appearances for Arsenal in between. Currently on loan at Villarreal, he has made 14 appearances for the Yellow Submarine, scoring one goal in the process. However, with a plethora of attackers in his position at Arsenal, it is difficult to see him securing a starting spot so a move to Portugal could be on the cards.

William Carvalho has become the linch-pin in the Sporting midfield, making 54 appearances since his breakthrough season of 2013, and fits the category of defensive midfielder that Arsenal have been missing since the days of Patrick Vieira and Gilberto Silva
