A statement on released on Arsenal's website read: 'Alex Iwobi has signed a new long-term contract with Arsenal. 'Everyone at Arsenal would like to congratulate Alex on his new contract and we look forward to his continued progression in the season ahead.'

Iwobi told Arsenal.com: 'I'm delighted to have signed a new contract, especially with a club like Arsenal who are so big,' happy to sign for them. 'I like to think I have earned it. I have gone through a lot with Arsenal so to have a new and improved contract is very good and I'm happy to have earned it.

'I have had ups and downs. As I was growing up I had a lot of downs but as I get older things just keep getting better and better. 'The ultimate goal is to break into the first team and play as many games as I can.'

Promising signs

The 19-year-old was one of the brightest youngsters for Arsenal during pre-season, scoring in Arsenal’s 6-0 win against Lyon during the Emirates Cup, and Arsene Wenger believes Iwobi has what it takes to make become a superstar in the future.

Iwobi was been named on the bench for the North London derby clash against Tottenham in the Capital One Cup, however he is yet to make a competitive appearance for the Gunners.

A big act to follow

The nephew of Jay-Jay Okocha, Iwobi is a player who has played all over the pitch from attacker to full-back, however he is now seen as a centre forward due to his pace, clever movement and eye for goal.

Iwobi has played for Arsenal at every level for the Gunners and has even captained the under-21 side on multiple occasions. Despite his attacking capabilities, Iwobi tends to miss more than he scores; however Iwobi is only 19-years-old, giving him plenty of time to develop his finishing and to nail down his position.
