Mathieu Debuchy seems set to leave Arsenal, with his most likely new home either being Aston Villa or Sunderland - both of which are Premier League relegation fighters. The French fullback joined the Gunners in the summer of 2014 from Newcastle for a reported fee of £12million pounds, as a replacement for Bacary Sagna who joined Manchester City.

Debuchy - an unfortunate - tough spell at Arsenal

The 30-year-old settled in well during the start of the 2014-15 campaign, but was unfortunately hit by an array of injuries, and subsequently replaced by Hector Bellerín. Bellerín's form and ability to adapt to the game so well and so quickly was completely unpredictable, meaning he'd solidified his place in the team as the club's first-choice right-back.

Even when Debuchy has played he has looked off the pace, featuring in the FA Cup and League Cup, and on no occasion did he successfully put down a marker to prove he could push Bellerín competition-wise. His departure would seemingly prove beneficial for all parties with Debuchy becoming increasingly vocal about his frustrations of not being involved in first-team action regularly enough, and Arsenal seeking better options. One such option could come in the form of on-loan full-back Carl Jenkinson.

Jenkinson hammered into shape

Jenkinson was sent on loan to West Ham in the summer of 2014, the same time Debuchy arrived at the club. He did well enough in the first season under Sam Allardyce, that the new Hammers manager, Slaven Bilic, decided to take him back for another loan spell, where he has performed consistently, and featured in 20 of West Ham's 23 league games.

West Ham has allowed the Englishman to showcase his defensive abilities, whilst also proving himself useful in a counter-attack, utilising his blistering pace, and providing good service into the box. Jenkinson has still shown to be capabale of a rash challenge, but that will improve with experience, seeing as he is still only 23-years-old.

It seems that West Ham are preparing for life without Jenkinson as they have recently purchased right-back Sam Byram from Leeds United. If Debuchy does opt to leave Arsenal before the end of the current window, it means the Gunners would need to look no further for a capable back-up defensive option than Jenkinson himself, who returns in the summer.
