Nathaniel Clyne's late strike made up for his goalkeeper's first half howler to earn Southampton a point at Villa Park.

Southampton set the tempo early on as was expected but did not do a lot more other than dominate posession. Their best chance of the opening 20 minutes fell to Saido Mane who shot right footed just wide of the right post from the edge of the box after a lovely interchange between Ryan Bertrand and Dusan Tadic to set the chance up.

However, it was the hosts who took the lead on the counter attack just before the half hour mark. A hopeful ball over the top saw Gabriel Agbonlahor give chase but Alderweireld seemed to be in control of the situation only to leave the ball for his keeper Fraser Forster who insisted on coming for a ball he was never getting. This allowed Agbonlahor to nip in and be left with an open goal which he found with his left foot from eight yards.

In the 37th minute Southampton finally manged to test Brad Guzan in the Villa goal when Graziano Pelle fed Mane on the edge of the box and he bent one low right footed which the American stopper did brilliant to get down to and tip round the post left handed.

Villa had a golden chance to effectively wrap up the win just two minutes into the second half when Alan Hutton's cross from the right found Andreas Weimann at the far post who pulled it back into the centre For Charles N'Zogbia who hit first time left footed but saw his effort blocked by Jose Fonte just in front of goal.

Another great chance for Villa to seal it arrived just 12 minutes from time with Weimann involved again. The Austrian played a lovely reverse ball to Agbonlahor who was in space on the right who then returned it into the middle for Weimann who blasted over right footed from 12 yards.

Three minutes later and Villa were punished as Southampton took advantage of one of the few times the home defence switched off. Ryan Bertrand got in behind Weimann down the left side of the box and pulled the ball sqaure for opposite full back Nathaniel Clyne who ran onto and hit first time with a powerful right sidefooted effort which flew past Guzan into the bottom left corner to save a point afer a poor performance.
