Burnley came from behind to secure a much needed point against fellow relegation contenders Aston Villa.

Joe Cole gave Paul Lambert's side the lead in the first-half, an advantage they managed to maintain until the 85th minute, when Danny Ings fired in an equaliser from the penalty spot.

Going into the match, Villa were without a win in their last eight games Premier League games. But they showed no signs of an out of form side in the opening encounters, putting the hosts under pressure from the outset.

After an end-to-end start, Aston Villa came inches away from taking the lead after just six minutes if it were not for a goal line clearance from Dean Marney, getting on the end of a deflected corner.

It was then the hosts' turn to come close, with Michael Kightly showing a great bit of skill in the Villa box before lashing his effort wide of Brad Guzan's far post.

A period of away dominance followed, with Paul Lambert's team enjoying the majority of the possession against a Burnley side who seemed content to sit back in their own half. This played into the hands of Joe Cole, who was superb in the middle of the park, showing signs of the player he once was during his pomp.

Cole's efforts eventually paid off when he broke the deadlock after 38 minutes. The former England international slotted home from Andreas Weimann's sideways pass to net his first Premier League goal in almost a year.

The opening goal livened up the game at Turf Moor, and Burnley came close to an equalizer when Brad Guzan was forced into a brilliant diving save to deny Danny Ings.

Aston Villa were on top in the early stages of the first-half, but Burnley were not making it easy for them and looked dangerous on the attack.

As the hour mark approached, Sean Dyche's men upped their tempo. Villa goalkeeper Brad Guzan was called into action once more to stop Michael Kightly's rampaging run through on goal, smothering the midfielder's effort with his legs.

Dyche then made a double change, with Scott Arfield and Lukas Jutkiewicz replacing Ashley Barnes and Michael Kightly.

Just minutes after coming on, Jutkiewicz was inches away from finding the equalizing goal, turning Keiran Trippier's costless-kick just past the post.

Despite their pressure, there was a sense that Burnley were destined not to score and as Villa began to get a foothold in the game once more, it seemed like another defeat was on the cards.

But, five minutes from time, the Clarets were handed a lifeline when Lukas Jutkiewicz was fouled in the box by Jores Okore. Danny Ings stepped up to take the resulting spot kick and made no mistake in smashing the ball into the roof of the net. Burnley were back on level terms.

Sensing blood, Burnley came out from the restart ferociously. Danny Ings hit the post before Lukas Jutkiewicz headed inches wide of the far post from a Ross Wallace cross in what proved to be the last chance of the game.

The home side will be wondering how they did not go on to win the game, but nevertheless extended their unbeaten run to three games. Burnley remain in 19th place, joined on 17 points by QPR and Hull City, and just two points away from Villa, who slip dangerously near the relegation zone in 16th place.
