Aston Villa are set to purse a bid for Burnley full-back Kieran Trippier, but face stiff competition from other Premier League teams.

Trippier is reportedly one of several summer targets for Villa, as they look to improve on the squad that narrowly escaped relegation last season, finishing 17th.

Manager Tim Sherwood is said to be a big fan of the 24-year-old right back, and wants to make him one of his first signings as Villa manager since taking over from the sacked Paul Lambert in February.

However, Villa will face stiff competition from other Premier League  teams to secure Trippier's signature. Tottenham, West Ham and Liverpool are all said to also have shown interest in the full back, who has a £3.5million release clause in his contract.

It is rumoured that Trippier would prefer a move to one of the higher teams, due to them offering him European football. Villa would have been able to offer him a Europa League berth had they won Saturday's FA Cup final, but were defeated 4-0 by Arsenal.

The news will come as no surprise to Burnley, who were relegated after finishing in 19th place. Trippier was one of the shining lights in their campaign, providing four assists from his defensive position.

Any move for the player could be funded by the sale of Christian Benteke, who has been linked with Liverpool, Manchester United and Atletico Madrid recently. Sherwood however, is ready to break the club's wage structure in order to keep the striker.
