Tim Sherwood has spoken about the capture of 26-year old defender Micah Richards from Manchester City on a free transfer.

The Villa manager believes Richards is entering his "peak years" talking to Aston Villa's official site.

Richards has many titles to his name including lifting the Premier League title and FA Cup, as well as playing in the Champions League for the Citizens and representing England at senior level.

Sherwood believes his "winning mentality" will be invaluable as he looks to rebuild a team plagued by relegation fears over recent years.

He said that he is "really pleased to get Micah on board" and he's "sure he will prove to be an excellent signing for the football club."

Richards was described as a "winner" by Sherwood something he believes is a vital trait in his sides.

He added that "Micah has played international football for England in the past and if he performs as well as I know he can for Aston Villa then there is no reason why he can't get back to that level again."
