Aston Villa have confirmed that left-back Aly Cissokho has left the club to join FC Porto on a season long loan deal, with the Portugese club given an option to buy the player upon the completion of the loan.

A poor season in the Midlands

It's no surprise to see Cissokho leave Villa so quickly after joining, after he suffered an extremely poor first season at Villa Park.

Signed as a replacement for the outgoing Antonio Luna last summer, Cissokho never showed the form that had made him a highly-rated youngster at Lyon.

Instead, his form continued from his turbulent spell at fellow Premier League club Liverpool in 2013/14, and he was quickly ousted from the team by Kieran Richardson.

Playing just 26 times in all competitions, Cissokho was part of a fragile defence that conceded 56 league goals in an eventual 17th placed finish, and it's unlikely that many Villa fans will be sad to see the back of him.

All the way back to Porto

He returns to a side that he played for during the early stages of his career, after a short spell at 2009, where he made 15 appearances without losing a game, and also made his Champions League debut.

This was enough to convince Lyon to buy him for a costly sum of $15million, and he was whisked away from the Portugese giants before he had even got his feet under the table.

A fairly decent three year spell in Ligue 1 followed before he moved to Valencia, where he struggled to make an impact before eventually being shipped out to Liverpool, a year before signing for Villa.

Cissokho now returns to Porto with the ambition of helping the club continue their dominance in the country's domestic league and cups, something which he wasn't able to do for long in 2009.
