Aston Villa and Birmingham City go head to head for the first time in over four years on Tuesday evening, in a mouthwatering League Cup clash.

With Birmingham's relegation in 2011 putting an end to the second city derby, passions will be on edge, as the two sets of fans get an opportunity to earn the bragging rights for who knows how long.

Neither have them at the moment, with the last fixture having ended in a 1-1 draw, however Birmingham did beat Villa 2-1 in this competition earlier that season, part of the run that saw them finish as eventual winners.

Although the headline of the match is its derby nature, there is the subplot of Villa's poor form, and the fact that Tim Sherwood desperately needs a victory to silence the doubters.

Bar the second round win over Notts County, Villa haven't won in 43 days, with four defeat and one draw making up their last five league games.

The last of those being against Saturday, in another derby game, where the Villans went 1-0 down to West Brom in another disheartening performance.

A lack of passion and gusto was clear to see, and this is something that the fans won't want to see a repeat of, especially since it's something that could cost them dearly.

Things are going somewhat better for the Blues, who sit 7th in the Championship after seven games. They've only lost once, winning and drawing three a-piece, but have taken a shot to their confidence after taking just one point from their last two games.

Team news:

It will be interesting to see if Sherwood makes a huge amount of changes for the fixture, in terms of resting senior players, due to the huge significance of the tie.

He's likely to go for home-grown players who are aware of the history of the game, meaning that Micah Richards, Gabby Agbonlahor, Ashley Westwood, Alan Hutton and Jack Grealish are all in line to start.

Carles Gil may be rested as he's still not 100% over his injury despite playing against Leicester City and West Brom, whilst Adama Traore could return to the squad after a three week layoff.

Idrissa Gueye, who missed the weekend's defeat, faces a late fitness test, whilst Jose Angel Crespo could make his debut at right back, if chosen ahead of Hutton.

Birmingham will be without the services of left back Neal Eardley, who again has suffered with injury troubles. Returning to play on Friday for the first time since last October, he dislocated his shoudler 44 minutes into the game against Ipswich Town, and will now face miss more games.

Match facts:

The game is being played at Aston Villa's Villa Park ground, which is just 3.5 miles away from Birmingham's St Andrew's Stadium.

In the history of the fixture, Villa have the upper hand. Their 51 wins easily beats Birmingham's 37, whilst their have been 29 draws.

The highest scoring game between the two teams was in 1895, when Aston Villa triumphed 7-3.

18 players have moved directly from one team to the other, whilst two managers have done so.

Birmingham scored more goals in their 4-2 win over Bristol City nine days ago, than Villa have in the league this season.

Road to the third round:

As a Premier League team, Villa have only had to play once so far in the competiton, but what a game it was! With the score tied at 3-3 following the completion of 90 minutes against Notts County, Scott Sinclair scored again to grab a hat-trick and help his team to an eventual 5-3 win.

Due to being a league lower, Birmingham started the competition in the first round, back in early August. They got through that with a narrow 2-1 away win against Bristol Rovers, before seeing off Gillingham more comfortably in round two, winning 2-0 on that occasion.
