Unfortunately, that's all we've got time for tonight. I've been Oliver Emmerson, taking you through Aston Villa 1-0 Birmingham. My match report will be up on the site soon, but until next time, goodbye!

Delight for Villa fans as Rudy Gestede's second half header gives them a 1-0 win over Birmingham, seeing them through to the fourth round of this year's League Cup.

That's it! Aston Villa win the Second City derby!

Full time! Aston Villa 1-0 Birmingham City (Gestede)

90+4: Into the last minute of stoppage time. Birmingham looking for a late equaliser still!

90: Villa taking it into the corner at every given opportunity, and Birmingham don't look like equalising now. They've got four minutes of stoppage time to do so!

87: Ayew comes close to getting himself a goal, jinking into the box only for Kuszczak to save his effort. He's been excellent, both going forward and back since coming on.

82: Close again! Veretout's ball in flicks off Sinclair's boot, but flashes wide.

81: They almost double it! Ayew's fires a cross into the backpost, and it hits Grealish and flies wide. Birmingham make another two changes, Maghoma off for Solomon-Obator and Donaldson off for Brock Madsen.

80: Into the final 10 minutes at Villa Park, can the hosts hold on to their narrow lead?

79: Good effort from Sinclair, pushed around the post by Kuszczak. The score remains 1-0, as Villa's resulting corner comes to little. Westwood picks up a booking for timewasting.

78: Yellow card for Morrison after he pulls back an onrushing Grealish, with a few handbags thrown in afterwards. Free-kick for Villa, chance for them to make it 2-0, although it's around 30 yards out so would take quite a strike!

74: What a chance for Birmingham! Gray the catalyst, playing Maghoma in on goal, but the winger can't convert - his left foot shot brilliantly held by Guzan.

70: Gray is still looking to make things happen for Birmingham, beating Clark to the ball on the edge of the penalty area before striking over the bar. He's been bright tonight, explaining why so many teams are interested in his services.

68: Great dribbling from Grealish as he beats two men to race into the penalty area, only for goalkeeper Kuszczak to poke the ball away from him at the last.

65: Birmingham respond to the goal with their first change, David Davis goes off for Jon Toral.

63: Much better from Villa! They move the ball through the midfield, shift it down the left hand side to Jordan Amavi. The left-back puts in a superb cross, which Gestede heads into the corner with sheer power.

Goal!! Gestede heads Villa in front!

60: A rare second half attack for Birmingham as they get a corner, cleared... before the Villa counter breaks down.

57: Ayew does well, beating two men on the edge of the area to get in a shooting position, but instead passes outwide to Bacuna. Perhaps lacking some confidence there.

54: Villa have started this second half much better. Veretout's precise pass to Bacuna down the right allows the full-back to cross, but Sinclair's header goes wide of the post. They've seized control of the game.

52: Grealish getting involved, crosses for Gestede whose knockdown falls for Sinclair, who shoots over.

49: Jordan Ayew will be eager to impress after having his chances limited in the league recently, he's got the crowd going again by winning a corner. Driven in by Westwood, but cleared.

45: We're underway in the second half.

Half-time changes for Villa. Lescott and Agbonlahor off, Grealish and Ayew on. Clark drops back into defence.

Other half-time scores in this competition tonight: Fulham 0-1 Stoke, Hull 1-0 Swansea, Leicester 1-1 West Ham, Middlesbrough 1-0 Wolves, Preston 0-1 Bournemouth, Reading 1-0 Everton, Sunderland 0-4 Manchester City.

Just a reminder, there's no replays in the League Cup, so if it's finishes level after 90 minutes, we head to extra time and maybe even penalties.

Birmingham have probably just edged it, the Championship side playing freely without pressure. Villa look nervous and it's showing in their play, as they once again have struggled to create chances.

Something of a rollercoaster first half, however it's been a rollercoaster in the way that it was good, then bad, then decent again. You can't help but feel that the game needs a goal.

Half time: Aston Villa 0-0 Birmingham City

45+1: Poor from Bacuna, whose free-kick goes wide.

45: Better going forward from Clark, as he wins a free-kick around 25 yards out, which could be Villa's final chance of the first half. Two minutes added on.

41: The ball in from that resulting free-kick is headed away by Richards, before Maghoma volleys well wide.

40: Clark punts a clearance straight out of play when he was in space, and it's met by a ring of boo's from his supporters. Probably sums up Villa's first half. With Birmingham getting back up the pitch, Clark then gets a booking for a poor challenge.

39: Straight up the other end, Scott Sinclair finds space to shoot deep into the penalty area, but it's straight at the 'keeper.

38: Gleeson gets a chance to whip in a set-piece delivery from the left wing, but yet again it's all too easy for Guzan to claim. Maghoma again threatens, picking the ball up from Donaldson and shooting wide.

35: Adding to the missed chances and yellow card, Agbonlahor is now getting some treatment from the medic, for what looks like a calf problem. Jordan Ayew is warming up.

34: It's gone flat here, but you'd argue that Birmingham are on top. Tim Sherwood's clearly not happy on the touchline, and he could ring the changes at half time, as he see's Gestede's poor flick bring another Villa attack to an early end.

29: At the centre of anything meaningful that happens at the moment, Agbonlahor breaks into the box down the right hand side, but after hesistating over what to do, shoots wide to the left.

22: Agbonlahor does get a card now, booked for a late tackle on Grounds, which put the left-back on the floor.

21: Handbags between Agbonlahor and Caddis at a corner, with the former going unpenalised for a little push in the back to the defender. Richards heads wide from the eventual ball in.

20: Donaldson thinks he's in on goal after Davis clips a pass over the top for him, but the flag goes up for a fairly obvious offside.

16: Slightly quieter in the last few minutes, with each side slowing things down after an exciting start.

11: Bacuna now looking to cause problems down the right wing, with his flat cross smothered by 'keeper Kuszczak before the Villa strikers could get a touch on it.

9: End to end stuff here! Sinclair almost gets free in the Birmingham area, with a goalmouth scramble eventually cleared by the Blues, who get a corner of their own after Donaldson outmuscles Lescott.

8: Gray takes it, gets it over the wall... with next to no power. A disappointing effort, easily caught by Guzan, who can't quite believe his luck.

7: Maghoma again does well, drawing a foul from Lescott on the edge of the area. A good chance for Birmingham to get on the scoresheet here, with Caddis and Gray standing over the ball.

5: Birmingham certainly not afraid to get at Villa early on, as they have their own first attempt. Maghoma did well to find some room in the penalty area, and his shot flew just wide of the post.

4: Gray gets down the left wing for the first time tonight, facing Bacuna one on one, only for his cross to float over the crossbar.

3: Gestede strikes the first shot of the night wide, chesting down well from Ashley Westwood's cross, only to drag the ball wide from the edge of the 18-yard-box.

2: Thumpingly strong challenge early on from Richards on Donaldson, that's got the home fans going, as if they needed any more motivation! Both teams looking to get the ball forward quickly, as they seek an early lead.

0: Kick-off! We're underway.

The players are out of the tunnel, shaking hands, and we're almost ready to start the game!

Just 15 minutes until the game gets underway, you can tweet your predictions in to our dedicated Twitter accounts, @FL_VAVEL and @VillaVAVEL.

Focusing our minds back on the game, it'll be interesting to see if the aforementioned Gray can get at Villa down the wings, and provide a catalyst for Birmingham's attacks. With no true cover from natural wingers, due to Sinclair and Agbonlahor playing just off Gestede, the Blues could look to overload Villa by overlapping down the wings.

A snippet from the statement reads: "The Aston Villa - Birmingham City derby will be a first for us and it is an occasion we will both relish. Both teams will endeavour to play the game the right way and in the right manner. And we are sure that you magnificent supporters will be passionate in getting behind your team, in a responsible manner. We hope the contest on the pitch does our clubs and the city proud."

It's sure to be an exciting clash, but everyone concerned with the two clubs will be hoping that any hostility on the pitch doesn't spill into the stands, and the two managers released a joint statement earlier today, warning fans about such matters.

Strong teams named by both Tim Sherwood and Gary Rowett there, with both managers eager to get one over their rivals. Villa look like they're starting Ciaran Clark in centre midfield, rather than his regular centre-back position, whilst Rudy Gestede gets the starting nod up-front. He'll be peppered with crosses tonight, and Villa fans will be hoping that he can head a few in. Jack Grealish and Carles Gil both only make the bench, presumably being rested.

Birmingham City substitutes: Legzdins, Robinson, Solomon-Obator, Toral, Shinnie, Lowry, Brock-Madsen.

Birmingham City XI: Kuszczak, Caddis, Spector, Morrison, Grounds, Gleeson, Kieftenbeld, Davis, Gray, Maghoma, Donaldson.

Aston Villa substitutes: Bunn, Hutton, Richardson, Ayew, Sanchez, Gil, Grealish.

Aston Villa XI: Guzan, Bacuna, Richards, Lescott, Amavi, Clark, Veretout, Westwood, Sinclair, Agbonlahor, Gestede.

Although Birmingham have won the cup more recently, with the aforementioned 2011 triumph, Villa have a much bigger history in the competition, having won it five times - bettered only by Liverpool who are on eight. The Blues have held the trophy twice, with Villa having come as runners up three times compared to Birmingham's one.

Tonight's game is expected to be a complete sell out at Villa Park, with the attendance set to reach a capacity of over 42,000. Each and everyone of those fans will be hoping to see goals and excitement, as their respective teams do battle.

For Birmingham, young winger Demarai Gray could be set to light up the place, as he's got the ability to be a potential matchwinner. Having just turned 19, he's already built up something of a reputation for himself, and will look to impress on the big stage this evening.

One man who could be set to make a difference tonight is Villa's club captain, Gabriel Agbonlahor. The local lad is set to start up front for Tim Sherwood's side, and he'll be hoping to add to the four career goals he's scored against Birmingham.

Villa haven't had as much joy in the league, winning just one in six, and losing four. Their last game was against West Brom at the weekend, with Saido Berahino's goal proving the difference as the Villans lost 1-0.

That draw against Ipswich, which ended a goal apiece, was Birmingham's third draw in the league so far, having won three games too, losing just one.

The visitors for tonight's game will be without full back Neal Eardley, after the ex-Blackpool man dislocated his shoulder in Friday's draw against Ipswich Town, which happened to be his first game since October.

There are some players that unfortunately won't be able to make the game, one of them almost certainly being midfielder Idrissa Gueye. After shining for Villa in the first few games of the season, Gueye injured his hamstring before the West Brom game at the weekend, and is unlikely to recover to face Birmingham. Adama Traore is another doubt, however there is a chance of him making the bench after him taking a kick on the ankle in the previous round.

It's also something that we haven't seen for a while, with the two having not met eachother in over four years. In the season where Birmingham beat Villa on their way to winning this competition, they were eventually relegated from the Premier League, paying a price for their cup heroics.

What an exciting game we've got on offer tonight, the second city derby. One of the biggest rivalries in the country, is shared by Villa and Birmingham, with the teams' ground's based just 3.5miles away from eachother.

Kick-off at Villa Park is set for 19:45BST, but before then we'll take a look at what we can expect from the game, and get the confirmed team news ahead of the match, so stick with us!
