Following an entertaining 1-0 home win against Birmingham City on Tuesday evening, Aston Villa have been drawn against Southampton in the Capital One Cup fourth round.

A tight Second City derby was decided by Rudy Gestede's second half header, with Tim Sherwood hailing the likes of Jack Grealish and Jordan Ayew, both of which made a huge impact after coming on for the second 45.

The win was Villa's second in the competition this season, after they entered at the second round stage, seeing off Notts County 5-3 after extra time, in a goal-laden match.

The next task was confirmed to be an away game at Southampton on Wednesday evening, with the draw conducted in the aftermath of Arsenal's 2-1 away win over Tottenham Hotspur.

Late October is when the game is likely to be held, with the 27th a possible date, meaning that it would bring to an end a tricky looking month for the Villans. They face home games against Stoke City and Swansea City, sandwiched by a trip to Chelsea, before wrapping thigns up against the Saints.

How far can Villa go in the competition?

Winning against Ronald Koeman's side would see Villa through to the quarter finals, where they could face a number of high profile opponents, such as Manchester United, Manchester City or Everton. Midlands rivals Leicester City are still in the competition too, so a possible derby fixture against them is also on the cards.

However, it's easier said than done, and beating Southampton is sure to be a difficult task, especially after they beat MK Dons 6-0 in their third round tie.

The two teams are currently fairly close in the Premier League, with the Saints just two points and one place above Villa.

For now, Tim Sherwood's men must switch their focus back to league matters, with a trip to Liverpool on Saturday now their number one priority.
