Aston Villa came from behind for a second week in a row, but weren't able to secure all three points, drawing 1-1 at home to West Ham United.

With a fine goal from left-back Aaron Cresswell having given the Irons a lead just before half-time, it was up to Villa to strike back in the second half, and they did through a Jordan Ayew penalty. However, despite their dominance in the final stage, the Villans extended their winless run that little bit further.

Villa on top in the early stages

Remi Garde's men started on top, winning a flurry of corners in the opening 15 minutes. However, they didn't make much use of them, with West Ham dealing with each set-piece comfortably.

Rudy Gestede was the target man from those corner's, and although he didn't connect with many of them, he was looking dangerous from crosses, and almost made it 1-0 with just under 20 minutes gone.

Jordan Verteout, who impressed throughout, did well to keep the ball in on the left hand side, before angling a ball in for Gestede. Leaping well, the striker connected with the ball, but could only watch on as his header flew just wide of Adrian's goal.

He'd get the chance to make up for his miss just a few minutes later, Alan Hutton this time crossing for him, but a deflection saw the ball out for another corner.

West Ham grow into the game, before scoring

Despite looking dangerous going forward, the Villans weren't putting in a completely impressive performance, due to some questionable defensive positioning giving West Ham hope on the counter-attack.

Mauro Zarate forced Brad Guzan into a good save at his near post, and even though Leandro Bacuna had an effort of his own saved at the other end, the Hammers were certainly growing into the contest.

It looked like the two teams were going to go into half-time at 0-0, especially when Cheikhou Kouyate headed onto the crossbar following a deflected effort falling to him, but there was just about time for a fine strike from Aaron Cresswell to put West Ham in the lead.

Picking the ball up on the left side following a good switch of play, the full-back ran at Hutton, before striking the ball across goal into Guzan's bottom corner to give his side a slender lead.

Villans respond well as Ayew's penalty levels it up

Garde's side responded well as play resumed for the second half, but the Frenchman was left holding his head in his hands as Gestede missed yet another chance. With a brilliant cross from Hutton finding the target-man on the edge of the six yard box, it looked like it'd be a trademark Gestede goal, only for him to head over the bar.

Veretout went close himself a few minutes later, leaving Adrian's hands stinging with a powerful effort, as the 'keeper pushed it just wide. It didn't matter too much though, as the Villans were level thanks to a penalty shortly after.

Whether it was a penalty is up for debate, as Angelo Ogbonna made light contact with Gestede in the area, but the referee deemed it enough contact for a penalty, which Ayew tucked away neatly.

No Boxing Day victory to be found

From then on it was all Villa, who dominated proceedings right up until the very end, only to be denied a winning goal by a resilient West Ham defence. The closest they came was with around 20 minutes to go, as James Collins hooked Hutton's header off the line, with half the ground thinking it was in.

Adama Traore coming on gave Villa another late lift, but it wasn't to be, and they're still nine points away from safety.
