Aston Villa host Liverpool on Sunday afternoon, hoping to spring a surprise against the Reds, and thus continue their recent improvement in form.

Whilst you might assume that the pressure will be off Villa after their better performances, and the fact that they're against Jürgen Klopp's Reds, the fact that some teams around them picked up vital points on Saturday makes it an even bigger fixture for Remi Garde's men.

Those around Villa have lengthened the gap

Starting the weekend bottom of the table, four points behind Sunderland, Villa were hoping to make up some ground on the Black Cats. However, Sam Allardyce's men defeated Manchester United 2-1, meaning that the best Villa can do is pull it back to a four point gap.

18th place Norwich City also picked up a valuable point, drawing 2-2 at home to West Ham, but it could have been worse for Villa, given that the Canaries threw away a two goal lead.

Good form gives Villans confidence

They will take some heart from their aforementioned good form, with eight points taken from their last five league games. That's as many points as they'd managed in the previous 20. Beating Crystal Palace before picking up draws against Leicester City and West Brom, Villa went down 2-0 to West Ham, before seeing off Norwich last week.

They might feel that they can get at Liverpool, given the Reds' recent poor form. Despite making the Europa League last 32 and Capital One Cup final this season, they've never really got going in the league, and can only move as high as eighth with a win on Sunday.

They've only won one of their last five league games, taking one point from the last two. League leaders Leicester City saw off Klopp's men at the King Power Stadium, before Sunderland rescued a point at Anfield following going 2-0 down.

Team news

One big loss for Villa is that of Jordan Ayew, with their Player of the Season so far serving the second of a three match suspension, following being sent off against West Ham.

Rudy Gestede faces a race to be fit for the clash, given that he's not fully recovered from a hamstring injury that forced him off against West Brom. Alan Hutton is back in the fold, and could start ahead of Micah Richards at right-back.

The likes of Jordan Amavi and Adama Traore are still out with long term problems, whilst Libor Kozak's injury means that Villa are furthered strained up front, with Gabriel Agbonlahor likely to be given the nod.

Joe Allen and Dejan Lovren both picked up injuries against Sunderland for the Reds, and whilst Lovren will just miss this game, Allen could be out for around a month.

Martin Skrtel is still out, meaning either Kolo Toure or Steven Caulker will partner Mamadou Sakho at centre-back. There is some good news, with Daniel Sturridge in line to make his first start since December.
