Chelsea FC have confirmed a 5 year contract extension for Cesar Azpilicueta, who was in electrifying form last season.

Azpilicueta, who was a member of the Barclays Premier League’s meanest defence which conceded just 27 times in 38 games, recieved the Chelsea Players’ Player of the Year award for his performances.

The 25-year-old—who can play on either defensive flank—arrived at Stamford Bridge from Marseille in August 2012 for a reported fee of £6.5 million.

He truly established himself as a first-team regular last season—replacing Ashley Cole in an unfamiliar left-back position (prompting Cole's move to Roma in the summer transfer window) —as Chelsea finished third in the Premier League with Azpilicueta making 29 appearances.

Many had expected Filipe Luis to take the left-back spot, with Azpilicueta taking up his more natural right-sided spot ahead of Branislav Ivanovic. However the Serbian has performed above and beyond this new season, with Ivanovic netting 2 goals in 3 games.

The contract extension will come to the delight of many Chelsea fans, knowing that the Spaniard will be giving his best years to his club and to the fans.
