Shrewsbury town put in a fantastic performance against the Premier League leaders but were edged out in the end because of a late own goal.

The game had a quick start with both sides getting good chances from corners. The first was for Chelsea as Liam Lawerence flicked a left wing cross straight to Oscar at the far post who volleyed back in right footed only to see the ball blocked on the line.

Just two minutes later and a similar chance for Shrewsbury as a left wing corner was hung to the back post where Daniel Knight-Percival headed it down, which Petr Cech had to save low to his left right on the line. The rest of the first half was lacklustre as Shrewsbury did a great job of frustrating their esteemed opponents.

The second half had a bit more quality to it and this showed just three minutes in when Chelsea took the lead. A lovely team goal as Andre Schürrle played the ball into Mohamed Salah on the edge of the box who in turn flicked it into the path of Didier Drogba who fired home first time left footed from 15 yards on the half volley.

Just three minutes later and it could have been two as Schürrle was given space in the Shrews half and delivered a ferocious 30 yard strike with his right foot which goalkeeper Leutwiller did well to turn over the bar left handed. The keeper was tested again eight minutes later as he beat away a right footed 20 yard effort from Drogba after Chelsea had won the ball high up the field.

Chelsea were still not looking too convincing however and were punished for not finding the second goal by their much lower ranked opponents. Just 90 seconds after coming off the bench striker Andy Mangan equalized for Micky Mellon's side in the 77th minute. A left wing corner was knocked down by Jermaine Grandison and the ball broke for Mangan six yards out and he turned it in right footed.

Jose Mourinho's reaction was to throw on Willian and Nemanja Matic with the former managing to get the Premier League leaders out of jail. The Brazilian whipped in an in-swinging low cross from the left that looked like it might be turned in by Drogba, however Grandison was there first only to glance the bouncing ball into his keeper's bottom left corner just nine minutes from time.
