Hello everyone, I'm Danial Kennedy and welcome to VAVEL's coverage of Everton - Chelsea
It was very dramatic the last time that these two met on Merseyside with Chelsea running out 6-3 winners.
Diego Costa’s hat-trick was the highlight as other goals from Branislav Ivanovic, Nemanja Matic, Ramires and an own goal from Seamus Coleman cancelled out goals from Kevin Mirallas, Steven Naismith and former Chelsea man Samuel Eto’o.
Lennon is expected to make his second debut for the Toffees barring injury, Mori is also expected to make an appearance while Bryan Oviedo is a doubt after he picked up knee injury before the international break.
Tim Howard will need a late fitness test after returning late from international duty, Tom Cleverly is expected to be out for around six weeks with an ankle ligament injury while Leighton Baines is still recovering from surgery.
Mourinho could be without first-choice keeper Thibaut Courtois after picking up an injury in training on Wednesday. Oscar could make his return after picking up an injury on the opening day while Captain John Terry is available again after his serving his suspension.
Anything that has went bad for Martinez has arguably gone ten times for Jose Mourinho with one victory so far.
Everyone expected it to be business as usual this season for the holders but they have looked a shadow of their former selves with a win away to West Brom sandwiched between a draw with Swansea City on the opening day and disappointing defeats to both Manchester City and Crystal Palace.
Mourinho went onto make two new signings in his defence before the window slammed shut but crucially neither were Stones who the club had been pursuing throughout the summer.
The blues eventually decided on Papy Djilobodji and Miguel Hector from Nantes and Reading respectively with the latter returning instantly to the Sky Bet Championship side on a season-long loan.
It would have been far from the start that manager Roberto Martinez would have wanted for his Everton side, collecting five points from a possible 12 with a victory over Southampton, stalemates with both Watford and Tottenham and their only defeat to Manchester City
The transfer window has closed since Everton’s goalless draw at White Hart Lane before the international break and the big positive will be holding onto young defender John Stones. Despite many bids and a transfer request his move to this week’s opponents didn’t materialise.
The Merseyside also managed to bring in some new faces before the window slammed shut with Aaron Lennon, who had spent the second half of last season on loan at Goodison Park, making his move permanent as well as Ramiro Funes Mori and Leoandro Rodriguez also been brought in.
Martinez will be thinking that they have come up against the champions at the right time as his side will be desperate for points ahead of tricky October with games against Liverpool, Manchester United and Arsenal all coming up in the next few weeks.
Current Premier League champions, Chelsea will be desperate to really kick start their season when they face a stern test when they take on Everton on Saturday lunchtime.
