Ever since signing for Chelsea, Gary Cahill has been a first-team regular and has done nothing but impress.

This earned him a slot into the England national side, but this season has seen his performances slip and his amount of game time decrease.

Something that he wishes to change as soon as possible, especially with EURO 2016 on the horizon upcoming. It is a competition that he will not only want to go to, but feature in as one of England's starting defenders; an opportunity he will only get should he be able to improve with Chelsea.

Wanting to stay

Despite his current lack of game time, Cahill has made it very clear that he "wants to be here (at Chelsea)" and the fact that he signed a four-year contract extension during the summer is a clear sign that he's passionate about remaining with the club.

For Cahill, he has more than just himself to consider. He admitted that his "family is settled here", which is only giving him a greater incentive to work his way back into the squad. The news that John Terry will be leaving at the end of the season means there will be a spot in the first team available, which Cahill will hope to claim.

Important meeting

Even though the experienced defender hopes to remain at Chelsea for the foreseeable future, he still admits that it ultimately boils down to his need to play football matches as he is fearful that he could become "stale" sitting on the bench every week like he has been.

Because of that, he sat down and had a meeting with current manager Guus Hiddink about his position and future with the club. It was a discussion that he described as "positive" but whether they change his position within the squad will remain to be seen.

Whatever the future holds for Cahill, he certainly doesn't believe he will change the way he is. That doesn't seem to be a bad thing as there are always fans "criticising people who are happy to sit on the bench, picking up money".

This is something that he doesn't want to do and whether that means he will need to leave Stamford Bridge, it is not yet clear.
