Chelsea hosted rivals Manchester United in an exciting 1-1 draw after an injury time equaliser from Diego Costa canceled out a sublime strike from Jesse Lingard and extended Guus Hiddink's unbeaten streak since returning to Chelsea in December.

First half

United started the game strong, maintaining possession in Chelsea's half. Michael Carrick tested Thibaut Courtois in the 12th minute, but the Belgian keeper was able to stop his excellent shot. The away side looked capable in the first half, but Chelsea's defence, headed by John Terry, remained firm.

Chelsea found their rhythm later on in the first half with attempts coordinated by Oscar, Willian, and Costa. Then, just before the break, the Blues were denied what they felt was a penalty when a shot from Terry was blocked by Daley Blind's arm, leaving the two sides goalless at the half.

Second half

In the second half, the hosts were unlucky to see Kurt Zouma off with an injury in the 53rd minute, and even more so when minutes later Lingard controlled a cross from Cameron Borthwick-Jackson with his back to goal and half-volleyed the ball past Courtois into the upper 90.

United's one-goal lead kicked the Blues into high gear, and the next 20 minutes were in reasingly dominated by Chelsea as they searched for an equaliser. Spanish goalkeeper David De Gea shut down the Blues at every turn, but in the first minute of stoppage time, Costa slipped past De Gea and found the back of the net to steal back a point for the hosts.

In the other five minutes of stoppage time, Costa had a couple more chances to seal a win for the Blues, but first his header went high, and then his final shot was expertly blocked by De Gea, forcing the two sides to end the game on level terms.

Terry wants to stay

The Chelsea captain gave a rather emotional interview after the match which touched on the game but focused on the possibility of his impending departure.

His thoughts about the game ranged from the draw, to the denied penalty, to Chelsea's current situation as a result.

On whether the result was fair, he said, "I think so, probably, looking at both halves. They started well the first half, but the second half, as the game went on, we started to grow into it."

He added, "Disappointed we didn't go a goal beyond actually, but great response again, and we've shown that great character as well since the manager's come in, and it's good to see."

On whether of not it was a penalty, he commented, "Yeah, it was going in I think. He put his hands out, and it was a difficult one for the referee, but inside the box it's going in. It's got to be a penalty for me."

"To be honest, we've got to start winning games," he continued. "We can't have anything around that mid-table, and teams are kind of dropping points in it around us now, so we need to start winning and kind of getting out of it.

"It's not a bad result, but ideally, we need to start winning."

Then the topic switched gears, and Terry was asked about what today was like with his future in mind.

"Incredible. For me, these are the best fans in the world. I'll never forget the memories, they'll live with me forever."

He continued, "The club's the most important thing. There's no communication between myself and the club at the minute. I said what I had to say, and that's how it was.

"I made it very clear I wanted to stay."

Hiddink pleased with the reaction

Interim manager Hiddink later had his say about the match, beginning with whether or not his side deserved the point:

"Well, I think we deserve the point. Man U started well. We dropped too far back, and for the first, let's say 20 minutes, they were dominating us without [having a] big chance, but [they were] a big threat."

The Dutchman continued, "The first half was similar in the first few minutes, and later on they made a beautiful goal. Lingard made a beautiful goal without good marking from our side but beautiful goal. Afterwards, I think our team reacted well, and we should have at least this point here."

On the penalty, he said, "I haven't seen it, I haven't seen it yet, and I like to have fair judgment. But okay, I follow my captain."

When asked about his substitutions, he said, "Well, we had planned to bring in Eden, He's coming from injury. We have built him up in the last weeks, and that's why we brought him, that was the plan, regardless of the score. I hope he'll get his momentum in the near future."

"That's a bad injury," he continued, shifting gears to Zouma, "But let's see. It's hyperextension, and that's always bad. I've had the same problem once, and it hurts very much, but that's to see tomorrow."

When asked how long the centre-back would be out for, he replied, "I'm not a doctor. Let's see tomorrow."

Then he was asked if he thought the referees gave too much stoppage time.

"No. Besides that incident I think lasted at least five to six minutes, plus the normal time for changes. We had all three changes, which last at least thirty seconds.

"Of course, of course," he responded when asked if he was happy with the result, "But I'm happy with the reaction of the team. It's not easy because I think Man U did a good job in the first half, but the what I said when the second half started was it's not an easy team to beat. We are happy to have this reaction of the team."
