Everton cruised to their first home win of the season as they dispatched a below average Aston Villa, who extend their winless streak. Villa are without a win since their shock 1-0 win over Liverpool on 13 September.

Everton dominated from start to finish, they made the breakthrough on 18 minutes when Leighton Baines delivered a cross which met the head of Phil Jagielka, who scored his second in three BPL games. Aston Villa's Nathan Baker suffered an injury midway through the first half and had to be replaced by Cieran Clark. Villa went in at the break 1 down.

The Toffees started the second half how they finished the last, with Ross Barkley teeing up Romelu Lukaku with an insatiable pass and the Belgian fired past a hapless Brad Guzan, who really should have done better with the save. Lukaku's third goal of the season signalled real trouble for Villa, who looked out of the game by now.

Aston Villa rarely got a foot hold in the game, and struggled to contain Ross Barkley, who was making his first appearance of the season after injury, and he put in a masterful 65 minute display which showed us all exactly why England boss Roy Hodgson rates the youngster so highly.

Another returning player, Seamus Coleman, added the third goal when Baines delivered a low cross to the Irishman after receiving the ball from Leon Osman's quickly taken costless kick. Coleman simply had to tap in and got a goal on his return to the first team fold.

Both teams needed a win, with Everton not exactly reaching the heights of last season as of yet. The Toffees had a stunning season last year in Roberto Martinez's debut season in charge, but today could possibly be the catalyst that Everton needed. Villa on the other hand, started the season encouragingly, with wins over Stoke, Hull and Liverpool and a draw against Newcastle meaning they had a solid start, but after losses to Arsenal, Chelsea, Manchester City and now Everton, the Clarets will want to get back to winning ways away at QPR next time.
