Roberto Martinez is interested in the France international as he looks to bolster Everton's attacking options for next season.
The Everton manager has prioritised a new "number 10" and a left winger among his transfer targets this summer, as he looks to give the squad more options in the attacking third and Dimitri Payet could fit the bill.
The 28-year-old was on target in France's 4-3 defeat against Belgium on Sunday and was monitored several times by Everton last season for his club Marseille, where he scored seven goals in 36 appearances in Ligue 1.
Payet moved from Lille to the Stade Velodrome in 2013 for £8 million and previously played his football at Saint-Etienne where he attracted interest from a host of Premier League clubs including Chelsea and Liverpool. Payet also once failed to turn up for training sighting a blocked move to Paris Saint-Germain as the reason.
Clinching a deal for Payet would be a good start to the transfer window for Everton after signing Tom Cleverley on a free transfer from Manchester United last week, but with Leon Osman and Steven Pienaar missing most of last season with injury problems, and with James McCarthy looking to leave Goodison Park, Martinez will need to add to his attacking options for the new campaign.
Where would Payet fit in?
Payet is a useful attacking player who can play on either flank as well as behind the striker and would be a valuable asset. The 28-year-old has experience in the Champions League and has been capped by France 14 times, scoring once.
For large parts of last season, Everton striker Romelu Lukaku was starved of any real service and the introduction of Payet would change that; he is a quick and intelligent forward who would allow Everton to play effectively on the counter attack.
Payet's contract has two years remaining on it but, at 28, he may fancy the chance to test himself in the Premier League.
