Lukas Podolski is a surprise target for Everton's Roberto Martinez, as he looks to add to his attacking options for next season

The German World Cup winner only has one year remaining on his Arsenal contract, it has been reported that he has been told by Arsene Wenger he is free to find a new club as he is no longer part of plans at the Emirates.

Podolski has been on international duty with Germany and featured as the world champions eased past lowly Gibraltar in a 7-0 win. He spent the second half of last season on loan with Inter Milan but the Italians were not interested in making the switch permanent after a poor showing last season.

Martinez keen on Podolski signing

Martinez is believed to be "very keen" on taking the former Bayern Munich striker, who is still very hungry and has become frustrated at his situation at the Emirates.

Podolski said that if he finds "the right club, right coach and right environment" then he will evaluate the situation. He went onto say that if those conditions were met, anything would be possible for the 30-year-old.

The German joined three years ago from FC Koln and has found his chances dramatically diminish over that period, which is strange considering Wenger has always maintained that he is the best finisher at the club.

Where is Podolski most effective?

Podolski is more effective on the left hand side of a front three which could well suit Everton. Romelu Lukaku, who joined on a permanent basis last season for £28 million from Chelsea, is in need of service after being frustrated by the quality of supply he received last season.

Everton struggled for goals in the 2014-15 campaign, only scoring 48 times in 38 Premier League games, and the addition of Podolski would definitely add goals provided he is playing on a regular basis.

It is still unclear how much the German will cost Everton but, with only one year remaining on his contract, it would not be a surprise if they acquired him on the cheap as Wenger looks to make space for new signings this summer as well as trimming their wage bill.
