Everton have reportedly made enquiries for Burnley's shot-stopper Tom Heaton.

Roberto Martinez is understood to have been impressed with Tom Heaton's performances last season, despite his club's relegation from the Premier League.

Heaton was ever present for Sean Dyche's Burnley side playing in all 38 league matches. The 29-year-old kept 10 clean sheets last season and reiterated the fact that he has the quality to perform at the top level.

Tom Heaton could replace a former team-mate at Goodison Park

Heaton has two years remaining on his contract at Turf Moor but is thought to be desperate to make a return to the top flight, the keeper was in the Manchester United reserves when Everton 'keeper Tim Howard was first choice at Old Trafford, his arrival could ironically signal the end to the American's time at Goodison Park as their first-choice goalkeeper.

Howard's Everton future has been left in doubt following the news that his ex-wife and his two kids have moved back to the US, which could persuade the 36-year-old to leave Merseyside. Martinez's men struggled defensively last season, with many fans blaming Howard for their poor defensive record. The Toffees conceded 50 goals last season in the league, Howard kept seven clean sheets in his 32 league games, conceded 44 goals.

Heaton could be the first of many arrivals at Everton this summer

Heaton's signing would continue a bright start to this summer for Everton, who have already signed Tom Cleverley from Manchester United on a free transfer, have been linked with Barcelona's winger Gerard Deulofeu who impressed on loan at Goodison Park in the 2013-14 season, the skillful Spaniard played 25 times, scoring three goals and contributing three assists as well as plenty of chances created.

Everton finished 11th last season after a troublesome campaign which saw them flirt with relegation for a large portion of the season, Martinez looks determined to improve his squad to avoid a repeat in 2015-16 as they hope to assert their European creditenials once more.
