Luke Garbutt has dispelled rumours of a possible departure from Everton this summer by signing a new five-year deal with the club.

The left-back's contract was set to run out this summer, and the lack of news on his extension had led to a whole host of rumours about his possible departure.

Many clubs from both the Premier League and the rest of Europe were linked with the 22-year-old, with city rivals Liverpool even reportedly interested in the youngster.

Last season

Garbutt enjoyed something of a breakthrough season for Everton last year, starting 10 games during a campaign where regular left back Leighton Baines suffered with regular injury problems.

Impressing whenever he played, the full-back showed his promise with a blend of pace and defensive talents, added to with signs of a promising set-piece taker. Even when Bryan Oviedo returned from a broken leg, he remained as the second-choice left back.

Garbutt's season ended with him earning a call up to England's UEFA European Under-21 Champioship squad, where he played in all three group games as the Three Lions exited the competition at the first hurdle.

Will he realise his potential?

The question now is whether or not Garbutt can continue his development under the management of Spaniard Roberto Martinez.

Logic dictates that Baines won't have the same injury problems as he did last season, and it will be very hard for Garbutt to displace England's first choice left back.

However, Martinez has spoken in the past about converting Baines into a centre midfielder, like Pep Guardiola has for Philipp Lahm at Bayern Munich. If this were to happen, it could open up an opportunity for Garbutt to make the left-back role his own at Goodison Park.

Alternatively, a temporary move away could be sorted for Garbutt, with newly promoted AFC Bournemouth reportedly interested in securing his services on a season long loan. If he were to move to Dean Court, he would link up with former Everton teammate Sylvain Distin, who has joined the Cherries on a free transfer this summer.
