After months and weeks of speculation, James McCarthy has signed a new five year contract with Everton. McCarthy had been rumoured to be unhappy at club but his new deal takes him up to the 2020 season with Everton

The Irish international is vital to the Everton team and committing to the future is welcome news for everybody involved with the Toffees.

Spurs and Manchester United had been interested

Reports surfaced that McCarthy was unhappy with Tom Cleverley signing a contract that paid more than his and he had been linked with a move to Spurs and even Manchester United.

Multiple reports suggested that he was ready to hand in a transfer request to force a move away from Goodison Park but signing a new deal, McCarthy commits his future to the Blues.

McCarthy buzzing with the deal

The midfielder said that he is “buzzing and delighted” to be committing his future to playing for Everton. McCarthy joined Everton on deadline day in 2013 for a fee believed to be around £13 million and has become a huge part of Roberto Martinez’s team.

McCarthy also said that he is “loving every minute” of playing for Everton. He is a huge fan favourite and fans will be delighted that he is staying around for what should be the best part of his career.

He keeps the Everton midfield ticking with his high energy and non-stop style of football. He gets stuck into tackles, picks the ball up from deep and has even begun to score goals.

Roberto Martinez even went as far as saying that McCarthy is a "fantastic asset.”

Everton making a statement

While media speculation has linked numerous Everton players away from the club, Everton are reiterating their stance that these players are not for sale.

Players like McCarthy, John Stones, Seamus Coleman and  Romelu Lukaku are pivotal to any future Everton success.
