Both Everton and Southampton have ambitions to challenge for European football this season, but neither side got off to the perfect start last weekend.

The two sides both started the Premier League season with 2-2 draws. Everton came from behind twice to salvage a draw at home to Watford, with Arouna Kone, scoring the equaliser four minutes before the final-whistle.

Southampton will come into this match with more optimism than the Toffees after creating enough chances to have won against Newcastle United last Sunday.

Toffees have historically come unstuck at Southampton

Everton haven't endured much success at Southampton historically. In fact, the Toffees haven't won at the St. Mary's Stadium since 2002, winless in their last six visits to the South coast and haven't scored in their last three visits.

Under Roberto Martinez, things have not changed with Everton losing 2-0 and 3-0 in their two visits, scoring three own goals across the two games.

Martinez will be hoping to record only Everton's third victory in 22 years at the St. Mary's Stadium on Saturday, a challenge that the Everton manager said his side will "embrace".

The start of a tough run of fixtures for Everton

There is some concern from Everton supporters, after an underwhelming summer in the transfer market so far and a 2-2 draw with Premier League new boys Watford in their opening game of the season.

Everton, therefore, need to put in a good display against the Saints especially considering the run of games which follows.

The match against Southampton is the start of a difficult run for the Toffees. Following the game on the South coast, Everton face Manchester City, Tottenham Hotspur, Chelsea, Swansea City, Liverpool, Manchester United and Arsenal in the next eight games, as well as a tricky trip to face Tony Pulis' West Bromwich Albion.

The Opposition

Southampton finished 7th last season and will welcome back manager Ronald Koeman to the dug-out after he missed their opening game following Achilles tendon surgery.

Southampton were very good at home last season, with 37 out of their 60 points coming at the St. Mary's Stadium. The Saints won 11, drew four and lost just four at home, scoring 37 goals and conceding just 13 in the process.

The Saint's firepower will test Everton, particularly Tim Howard and his defence, especially as the Toffees have kept just one clean sheet in their last 17 Premier League away games.

Graziano Pelle, who scored 16 goals in his debut season, has scored five goals in his last eight Premier League games including one in  last weekend's 2-2 draw with Newcastle. Pelle also scored two goals in Southampton's 5-0 aggregate win over Vitesse Arnhem in the Europa League.

Shane Long and Saido Mane are two other players who can threaten Everton and score goals and Jay Rodriguez, who made his first start in 16 months last week, will be hoping to rediscover the form that saw him called-up to the England squad in 2013.

Team News

Everton midfielder Kevin Mirallas should be fit, despite being forced off against Watford with an ankle injury.

Gerard Deulofeu, who could make his first competitive appearance since rejoining the club, Aiden McGeady and Muhamed Besic are also in contention to play after recovering from injuries.

Steven Pienaar (thigh), Darron Gibson (ankle) and Tony Hibbert (knee) will all miss out. As will Leighton Baines, after he had surgery on his ankle on Thursday, and the left-back will be sidelined for three months.

19-year-old Brendan Galloway started on the left side of defence in the opening game but Martinez has options and could choose to start Costa Rican defender Bryan Ovideo, who looks to revive his Goodison Park career.

18-year-old defender Mason Holgate could be in the squad after completing his move from Barnsley on Thursday.

Southampton could give a debut to midfielder Oriol Romeu, who joined from Chelsea this week, but defender Steven Caulker (illness) and midfielder Jordie Clasie (ankle) are both unavailable.

Fraser Forster (knee) and Florin Gardos (knee) are both long-term absentees, while Gaston Ramirez is also not expected to recover in time and Ryan Bertrand is still struggling with a knee injury.
