Ahead of the first Merseyside Derby of the season, we take a look at five recent derbies from an Everton perspective.

1. Everton 3-0 Liverpool

More commonly known as the Andy Johnson derby, Everton defeated Liverpool 3-0 at Goodison Park in September 2006. Johnson and Everton continued their great start to a season in which they got back into Europe.

Johnson himself signed from Crystal Palace that summer, started with goals against Watford and Tottenham Hotspur before he scored his derby day brace.

Everton outplayed their Merseyside rivals in all facets of the game, they defended stoutly, they battled in midfield and were clinical in attack.

Tim Cahill opened the scoring by sliding a shot under Pepe Reina. Johnson then blasted another past Reina at his near before half time and Everton went into the break 2-0 up.

They closed the game out late on after a shot from Lee Carsley was fumbled by Reina and Johnson followed in with a header.

2. Everton 1-0 Liverpool

An FA Cup replay at Goodison Park which would go to extra time, was capped off by a goal forever in Evertonians memories. Dan Gosling scored an 118th minute winner to send Everton through, in a cup run where they would be eventually beaten in the final.

The goal, which was missed by a lot of viewers because of an ITV technical glitch, was scored by the youngster who is now playing for AFC Bournemouth.

The game itself was tightly contested with the first real chance of a goal in the game coming on the hour mark. It will forever be remembered by Blues everywhere for Goslings goal and remembered by neutrals for the ITV Mistake.

3. Everton 1-0 Liverpool

Lee Carsley scored the winner for Everton in the 200th Merseyside derby. Carsley scored the winner with 20 minutes left to play and left Chris Kirkland standing with his strike.

It was a typical hardworking Everton performance under David Moyes, where the result sent the Blues second in the league table and stretched the gap to 12 points ahead of their Merseyside rivals.

The game as a whole was tense and either could have won it but it was Carsley’s strike after a pass from Marcus Bent that settled the game. Everton would go on to finish fourth in the league table, above Liverpool and qualifying for the Champions League.

4. Everton 2-0 Liverpool

Everton added more misery to Roy Hodgson’s spell as Liverpool manager after a 2-0 win at Goodison Park.

Goals from Tim Cahill and Mikel Arteta settled the game for the Blues who were out to impress and spoil the party for Liverpool’s new American owners, Fenway Sports Group.

Both sides had been struggling in the league early on, both in the bottom half of the table, with Liverpool in the bottom three.

The Toffees played a physical but classy game in which they outfought a Liverpool side that looked completely void of instruction or leadership. Cahill opened the scoring before the break with a strike into the top of Pepe Reina’s net.

Arteta scored just after the break when he thrashed home a strike from outside the area, past a stranded Reina.

5. Everton 3-3 Liverpool

One of the more recent games took place at Goodison Park in current boss Roberto Martinez’s first season in charge.

Everton fell behind in the game after a Philippe Coutinho goal in which he bundled the ball home after a corner. They weren’t behind for long, when Kevin Mirallas put the ball past Simon Mignolet at his far post after a ball into box fell to him.

Luis Suarez scored a free kick to give Liverpool a lead going into the break but the game jumped to life with 20 minutes to play. The then on-loan Romelu Lukaku guided the ball home to get Everton back into the game and then 10 minutes later, powered a header home to give Everton the lead.

The Blues look set to overcome the 2-0 deficit and take all three points until a late Daniel Sturridge header drew their rivals level.

Everton nearly won it late on but as James McCarthy struck the ball towards Mignolet but the shot was blown and then the full time whistle was blown on a memorable Merseyside derby.
