Joel Robles' heroics may have sent Everton into the quarter-finals of the Capital One Cup for just the second time in 27 years, but he will back on the bench against Sunderland on Sunday.

Everton manager Roberto Martinez was quick to make it clear that Tim Howard would retain his place in the starting XI despite coming under criticism for his recent performances, particularly against Arsenal last weekend.

But is Martinez right to stick with Howard or should Robles be rewarded for his Capital One Cup heroics?

The case for Robles

Many Everton supporters have called for a change of goalkeeper and they would like to see Joel Robles given a chance in the first-team.

Robles has been preferred to Howard in the Capital One Cup this season (all three of his appearances this season have come in the competition) and he had an extra incentive to impress against Norwich City after the American's form has come under question.

Howard has had his doubters for some time now but he has come under recent criticism for his failure to dominate and command his area.

The American was culpable for both of Arsenal's goals in the Toffees' 2-1 defeat against Arsenal last weekend. The Toffees were undone by headers from Oliver Giroud and Laurent Koscielny in quick-succession and much of the scrutiny fell on Howard, who twice failed to deal with balls into the box.

This wasn't the first occasion this season that Howard has been criticised for not dealing with crosses into the box. In the 1-1 draw with Liverpool, Howard failed to deal with the Liverpool corner that Danny Ings' scored from. Everton have struggled for consistency this season and cannot afford to concede goals as cheaply as they did against Arsenal and Liverpool.

Robles appeared to seize the opportunity to impress against Norwich in midweek and left Martinez with a big decision to make. The former Wigan Athletic goalkeeper was the Everton hero, making a number of crucial saves to deny the Canaries, including a decisive one in the penalty shoot-out.

He made a fantastic one-handed save from striker Lewis Grabban's header to force extra-time in the final minute of normal time and then saved Wes Hoolahan's penalty to give Everton the advantage in the penalty shoot-out, before Nathan Redmond then fired over.

Robles showed last season that he can improve with a run of games after making seven appearances in the Premier League while desputising for Howard, who was suffering with a calf injury. His last league appearance was in the Merseyside Derby in February, in which he kept a third successive clean sheet. However, this did not stop him from being replaced by Howard in the next game against Chelsea

The case for Howard

While Tim Howard has been undisputed number one for much of his last nine years at Goodison Park, his position has rarely looked less secure than at present and Robles' performance on Tuesday night only added to the debate.

The main case for playing Tim Howard ahead of Robles is the American goalkeeper's experience. The former Manchester United player has made 383 Premier League appearances, and nearly 400 for Everton in all competitions.

Whereas, Tuesday was only Robles' 21st appearance for Everton in the two years he has been at Goodison. Robles' career total, with Atletico Madrid, Rayo Vallecano, Wigan and Everton, stands at just 50 appearances - no match to Howard's experience.

Martinez said in his pre-match conference that Howard's role on the pitch is "much more important" than his individual performance.

This is especially important this weekend, with captain Phil Jagielka joining Leighton Baines on the sidelines and Seamus Coleman also a doubt, it is likely that 24-year-old Ramiro Funes Mori will be the eldest player in defence. Therefore, Howard's experience will be invaluable at the back.

Even the best goalkeepers in the world are capable of making mistakes. Robles' first half performance against Barnsley and the goal he conceded against FC Krasnodar in the Europa League last year showed he is not without his faults either.

The verdict

Despite Joel Robles' heroics on Tuesday night, Roberto Martinez was very quick to make it clear that Tim Howard would retain his place in the starting XI against Sunderland on Sunday.

Martinez's decision will baffle many Everton supporters, who believe that it is time for a change between the sticks. His side have struggled for consistency this season and cannot afford to concede goals as cheap as they did against Arsenal.

If Howard was to be kept out of the side it might bring a reaction and bring the best out of him again and will give Joel Robles a chance to get more first-team experience under his belt.
