Everton's Aiden McGeady and Conor McAleny will both spend the rest of the season away from Goodison Park after agreeing loan deals, while a proposed loan move for Darron Gibson failed to materialise.

McGeady has joined Championship side Sheffield Wednesday until the end of the season, while McAleny joins League One side Wigan Athletic on loan for the rest of the season.

Owls take McGeady on loan

Aiden McGeady has joined Sheffield Wednesday on loan until the end of season in order to get more game time ahead of the 2016 UEFA European Championships in the summer.

The 29-year-old has made 43 appearances for the Toffees since joining from Spartak Moscow in January 2014, but he has struggled to force his way into Roberto Martinez's plans this season, featuring just once in the Capital One Cup tie against Barnsley in August.

The Republic of Ireland boss Martin O'Neill warned that McGeady would need to be playing regularly if he was to make his 23-man squad for the tournament this summer and the addition of Oumar Niasse for a fee of £13.5million on transfer deadline day limited his chances of regular first-team football ahead of Euro 2016 even more.

Everton were prepared to sell the winger during the summer window but it is believed McGeady turned down moves to Norwich City and Sunderland, but he has now decided that a loan spell at Sheffield Wednesday is the best place for him to secure regular game time.

McAleny joins Wigan Athletic on loan

Conor McAleny has made three appearances for Everton's first-team since being promoted from the academy, but he has been unable to force his way into Martinez's plans despite signing a new three-year deal in the summer of 2014.

The 23-year-old has spent most of the season with the Blues' under-21 side, although he did spend a nine game spell in the Championship with Charlton Athletic, and his loan to Wigan will be the fifth of his Everton career after spells with Scunthorpe, Brentford and Cardiff City as well as Charlton.

McAleny follows Jonjoe Kenny and Francisco Junior as players loaned from Everton to Wigan this season and he will be hoping to impress Roberto Martinez during his loan spell ahead of next season.
