The Premier League returns this week and it sees Leicester City take the trip up North to face Steve McClaren's Newcastle.

The Foxes, only one point off top spot in third, face Newcastle United, who are sitting one place above the relegation zone. They go into the game very confident of picking up maximum points and challenging for the league's first position.

Ruud's record

The Leicester City faithful will be desperately hoping to see Jamie Vardy's name on the scoresheet for the 10th Premier League fixture on the spin. However, this time is the most important one so far, as, if Vardy finds the back of the net at St James' Park, he will tie with former Manchester United striker Ruud Van Nistelrooy for the most consecutive Premier League games scored in.

The record is currently at 10 games and Vardy has already scored in nine consecutively. He has every chance of equalling, or even breaking, this lucrative record, coming up against a Newcastle defence who have already conceded 22 goals this season.

Although club captain, Fabricio Coloccini, is back for the Magpies, the former Fleetwood Town striker hasn't been stopped by any of the defenders he has faced in his last nine league games.

There couldn't be a better time for Vardy to be within touching distance of such a record either as the England international is in the form of his life, as well as having some of the league's in-form midfielders behind him, like Danny Drinkwater, Riyad Mahrez, N'Golo Kante and Marc Albrighton.

Drinkwater and Albrighton are most probably on the radar of England manager Roy Hodgson as the pair have showed consistency and quality on many occasions this season.

It wasn't just Leicester fans who were visibly surprised by the exclusion of both midfielders as, even after Michael Carrick pulled out injured, they were both overlooked in favour of Jesse Lingard and Ryan Mason in the last set of England fixtures.

It has been made public that all of the Foxes' players are desperate to help Vardy on his way to the record and this was typified by how Mahrez handed Vardy the penalty to bring him closer to the record against Watford before the break.

McClaren's misery

The first 12 Premier League games of McClaren's Newcastle career have certainly not gone to plan, with his side already dragged into a relegation dogfight after only picking up 12 points from as many games.

The ex-England manager has seen his side win only twice so far, with those coming against two of the three promoted sides, and nearly half of their league goals came in the 6-2 victory over Norwich City.

The other win was a 1-0 result away at Bournemouth last time around, where the Magpies only managed two shots compared to the hosts' 20.

McClaren was considered a massive risk when he was appointed as Newcastle boss in the summer and, so far, it definitely isn't a risk that has paid off.

The decision has given the Toon Army even more reason to dislike Mike Ashley and it seems as though they didn't need to be asked twice to take this invitation to increase the hatred towards their owner.

With the wealth of quality on offer to McClaren, it comes as a surprise that Newcastle are sitting so low in the table. However, the two positives from their season so far are the performances of Georginio Wijnaldum, who has shown that he's definitely value for the reported £15 million that he cost, and Ayoze Perez.

With Wijnaldum's good displays though comes the uncertainty of his Newcastle career and rumours of him leaving are already circulating ahead of a possible January move.

Magicians in both sides

Newcastle's Perez and Leicester's Mahrez have both been influential for their respective sides this season with their fast pace and tricky feet. Their abilities to change direction at such high speeds leaves defenders all over the place when attempting to stop the threats of both players.

Mahrez has been one of the league's surprise packages, scoring seven goals whilst laying on five assists for his team-mates.

The Algerian wizard's performances this season have been slightly overshadowed by his attacking partner Vardy, but the winger has certainly not gone unnoticed in the top-flight, gaining praise from all angles of the footballing world.

He's also being noticed as one of the greatest bargains in world football at the moment after only costing Leicester somewhere in the region of £400,000.

On the other side, Perez has been an ever-present top performer for Newcastle over this season as well as last.

The Spanish forward has scored ten goals in 46 appearances for the North-East side, one of those coming in Newcastle's last game and clinching the 1-0 win over Bournemouth.

The 22-year-old has represented Spain at Under-21 level twice and might have to move to a so-called 'bigger club' if he hopes to be pulling on the red shirt for the seniors. The former Tenerife man certainly won't find himself in the plans of the Spanish boss whilst playing for a Newcastle side who might possibly be playing second-flight football this time next season.

There's no doubt that if his side were to drop out of the Premier League, he'd find a side either in La Liga or a top-half Premier League team.

The match

Leicester are still yet to lose away from home in the league this season and Newcastle have only won one game at St James' Park. The way this Leicester side have been playing this season, you can't see past a comfortable away win on Saturday.

The Foxes' attackers have been on fire and one wouldn't be surprised to see them net a few goals. However, they have been defensively poor, only picking up one clean sheet, and so it is likely that Newcastle will net at least once in this one.
