Liverpool face Preston today knowing that a win would take the `reds` into their trip to America next week full of confidence as they go in search of victories against the likes of Milan and Manchester City. After a midweek defeat at the hands of Brondby, Brendan Rodgers` men are affirmative that the real purpose of their workouts against the likes of Brondby and Preston is to regain their fitness levels. However, former Swansea midfielder, Joe Allen, has set his sights on a mouth watering performance to give to the fans against Preston before jetting off for the US, but also states how important pre season is for your general fitness.

"Your general fitness is probably the most important thing then the tactics and performance come second - although it seems strange saying that!

"But at the same time, we're looking to hit the ground running in terms of performances. If we can pick up some good results, it would obviously be an added bonus as well.

"It's always tough when you come back. But we're getting over the first 10 days now, which is obviously the toughest. We're coming through it."

"It was a good game last year," added the Welsh midfielder. "We're looking to really build match fitness up.

"We had the chance at Brondby to get 45 minutes under our belt. I'm sure we can progress from Saturday onwards from that point of view, because the season will be around before you know it."

Joe Allen and the rest of the `reds` are likely to be given a 45 minute run out, although the likes of Martin Kelly and Tiago Ilori are doubts following the midweek match. Emre Can is likely to come in for his debut along with Rickie Lambert. The game might also be a last chance for some of the younger squad members to impress the boss, Rodgers, as the U21`s will travel to Holland next week on a preseason tour, while the senior squad will be travelling around the United States, with Adam Phillips as the only real surprise name travelling.
