French forward Loïc Rémy's proposed move to Liverpool has fallen through, after a heart issue was discovered that lead him to fail his medial and scupper the deal.

Queens Park Rangers had accepted an £8.5 million bid for the forward, who agreed personal terms including an £80,000-a-week wage and flew out to Boston to have a medical with the club's staff before joining up with the squad after the signing was unveiled.

It was believed that only paperwork was holding the deal up whilst Rémy stayed stateside and the striker was due to be unveiled as a Liverpool player early next week, but his dream of playing in the Champions League has been momentarily crushed.

He was granted an extension of his post-World Cup leave to travel to New York with his family before joining up with his new teammates, and the club were rumoured to have even left aside the prestigious number seven shirt left vacant by Luis Suárez' departure. However, it emerged recently that a serious issue has meant Brendan Rodgers and co. have pulled out of the deal.

Liverpool refused to comment on a specific reason for pulling out of the deal, when they arrived in Chicago for tonight's game here at Solider Field, but it is believed that a recurring heart problem, that has seen him fail as many as four medicals since 2002, has scared the club away.

This is not the first time that the Reds have been involved in any heart scares, after former Brazilian goalkeeper Doni suffered a heart attack whilst contracted with the club. He was away from the club for a long time on personal leave until the actual issue was revealed after he had left, and Doni was forced into retirement last summer as a result of the issue, and that could have been in the minds of those responsible for calling off the transfer.

The news comes as a bitter blow to the player, the manager and the fans. All of whom were excited at the deal, which looked to be a bargain given the forward's prowess in front of goal, and it also follows news that midfielder Adam Lallana could be out for as much as six weeks after a knock to his anterior cruciate ligament.

It was hoped that Rémy could have helped made up for the loss of Suárez' impact in front of goal, but the Reds will now have to look towards other alternatives. They could go back into pursuit of Swansea's Wilfried Bony, who they had briefly flirted with buying. The Ivorian could command a fee of £19 million.

Meanwhile, for the Frenchman, the aftermath of the collapse will mean he will now have to return to QPR for pre-season training, unless other clubs come in for the prolific striker. The clause in his contract, allowing top four clubs to purchase him at a half-price rate in comparison to the London club's close-table rivals means he could yet be an attractive proposition to other outfits.

Rodgers must look elsewhere for a new striker ahead of the upcoming Premier League campaign and what looked like a strong variety attacking options a few days ago now seems to be in danger, with only three weeks remaining until the season starts.
