Liverpool vice-captain Daniel Agger's time at Anfield looks set to be nearing to an long-awaited end, with the Danish defender looking set to make a cut-price move back to where he started out.

Agger looks set to make the £3 million move to Brondby, the club whom Liverpool bought the tall centre-back for £6 million from back in 2006. Since, Agger has rose through the ranks on Merseyside, becoming one of the most highly-regarded defenders in Europe, turning down moves to Barcelona and Manchester City in recent years.

The Dane has made 232 appearances for Liverpool, scoring five goals over his years at the club, and it would have been much more had he not been struck by injuries frequently throughout his Anfield career. Still, he leaves the club with an FA Cup, League Cup, Community Shield and Champions League Runners Up Medal, whilst also playing a part in the 2008-09 and 2013-14 seasons which saw the Reds narrowly miss out on their 19th English title and their first Premier League trophy.

Agger was a fan favourite whilst in a Red shirt, earning plaudits for his outstanding loyalty and his service to the club. The Dane famously elbowed Fernando Torres and publicly denounced him for the way that he left the club, and his "disrespect" to the club and has always spoke of his desire never to leave Liverpool for one of their rivals in Europe or the Premier League. Not to mention, his long-range goals and phenomenal displays will ensure he goes down as somewhat of a legend at the club.

However, under Brendan Rodgers, Agger has struggled to make an impression despite being handed the vice-captaincy last year. Fitness and form issues under the Ulsterman have seen him fall down the pecking order, with Martin Skrtel, Mamadou Sakho and £20 million Croatian summer signing Dejan Lovren all seemingly above him in Rodgers' thinking, paving the way for a move away from Liverpool.

A deal has now been negotiated with Brondby, with Rodgers and co. receiving only a nominal fee from the Danish Superliga club with few finances. Out of respect for Agger's wish to return to his homeland, the club have decided to agree a cut-price deal and let the 29-year-old leave, despite the possibility of bigger offers from other clubs. Despite not receiving the market fee for Agger, Liverpool are letting go of a player who wasn't happy at being considered second best in his position, and it is the best move for all parties.

The Reds are also close to a settlement with Agger over the final two years of his £120,000-per-week contract, with Brondby unable to sanction anywhere near those kind of wages for their ex-youth graduate. The move comes only two months after Liverpool came up against the Danes in a friendly that had been arranged in the deal over Agger's signature. The centre-back received a raucuous reception when he returned to a packed Brondby Stadion, and it now looks as though he will return permanently.
