AS Roma are reportedly mulling over a bid for Liverpool defender Glen Johnson.

The Reds star is out of contract in 12 months, so the Italian side could be tempted to bring him in for a cut-price £2m in the next transfer window.

The England international has been subject to some criticism recently, but Rudi Garcia is interested in giving the right-back the chance to start afresh in Rome - alongside ex-England defender Ashley Cole.

Queens Park Rangers manager Harry Redknapp is also monitoring the situation, subject to some reports, with the West-London side looking to pounce should any move to Italy break down.

Johnson started his career at West Ham, before making history as the first signing of Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich back in 2003. The young defender struggled, however, to make much of an impact at Stamford Bridge during his four-year tenure and was sold to Portsmouth in 2007.

The right-back impressed on the South Coast, winning over fans with his attacking style and earning a dream move back into the big-time with Liverpool in 2009.

Johnson has tied down the right-back spot for England, playing in the 2010 World Cup and also starring in Brazil this summer for the Three Lions.
