Recent reports have heavily linked the ex-Barcelona goalkeeper, Victor Valdes with a possible move to Anfield.  Liverpool’s current man between the sticks, Simon Mignolet, has come under a lot of criticism during his time at Anfield, not only from the fans but from club legend, Jamie Carragher.

Victor Valdes is currently a costless-agent, despite having played over 500 games for Barcelona, winning 3 Champions League titles and 6 La Liga titles. It is no doubt that he would add strength to the Liverpool squad, and a hefty amount of competition for Simon Mignolet.

It is rumoured that Valdes’ agent, Gines Carvajal, is set to fly into Liverpool to meet with officials sometime next week, and it is believed that the Reds would prefer a short-term deal, with an offer to extend if needs must. In addition to this, rumour has it that Valdes is eager to join the Reds, and is even willing to take a pay cut in order to secure the move. However, other sources say the deal has collapsed completely.

Since Pepe Reina’s dip in form during his time at Anfield, Liverpool have struggled to find the top quality goalkeeper they have been searching for in order to try and help mend their defensive problems. Unfortunately, Valdes has been plagued with a knee injury since March, for which he had surgery and was expected to be out of the game for 6/7 months. This meant that his original move to French side Monaco that had been arranged fell through in the summer. It was also rumoured that Liverpool offered Valdes a trial in order to check he was back to full fitness; however Valdes apparently shunned the offer, as he felt he did not need to prove that he had fully recovered from his injury.

It is clear that Liverpool aren’t playing as well as they were last season, having lost Luis Suarez in the summer, and just managing to squeeze out a result against QPR, we can see that they have multiple problems. Not only were they troubled with a poor defensive record in the 2013/2014 season, but they are now also struggling to produce the goals at the other end of the pitch. Will Liverpool secure a move for the Spanish goalkeeper? Only time will tell.
