Liverpool striker Daniel Sturridge has suffered further setbacks after picking up an injury during a training session on Monday.

It is believed the England international has sustained a thigh injury, and Liverpool are now monitoring him over the next two days.

It’s really bad news. The only positive with that is we don't play again until March. But that's a massive blow for Liverpool.

The extent of the 25-year-old’s injury should be revealed soon, having failed to make a club appearance since August.

After sustaining a previous thigh injury with Roy Hodgson’s side, Sturridge’s initial comeback was halted by a calf problem which emerged during a training session last month.

Manager Brendan Rodgers recently suggested their upcoming Premier League clash with Crystal Palace on Sunday could see the return of the fan favourite, but his return may be halted through further complications.

Following England’s 3-1 win over Scotland on Tuesday night, Hodgson commented on the striker’s situation, missing out in the fixture as a Wayne Rooney brace added to Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain’s first half opener. He said:

"It’s really bad news. The only positive with that is we don't play again until March. But that's a massive blow for Liverpool."

Last season saw Sturridge form an infamous partnership with Barcelona’s Luis Suarez, with one of English football’s most prolific striking partnerships netting 55 goals between them in league and cup competitions.

Prior to the Uruguayan’s £75 million deal to the La Liga giants, Sturridge worked alongside Suarez to fire his side to second place in the title race. However, he has managed just three appearances for the Merseyside club this season, with the Reds struggling to find the net.

Rickie Lambert, Mario Balotelli and Fabio Borini have all had chances at Anfield, but have just two goals between them all season. The trio are also all still seeking their first Premier League goal for the club, after enjoying successful spells elsewhere in England’s top tier beforehand.

Liverpool currently sit 11th in the table, having won just two of their eight league matches since Sturridge sustained his original injury.
