A superb display of goalkeeping from Adam Bogdan saw Liverpool denied the chance to progress to the fifth round of this season's FA Cup, as they drew 0-0 to Bolton Wanderers at Anfield.

In a game where the ball spent large durations around Bolton's penalty area, Bogdan time and time again denied any efforts from the Reds, and set up a replay at the Reebok Stadium to decide who progresses to the next round.

Bolton, accompanied by over 6,000 travelling fans, made a bright start as they looked to put Liverpool under pressure by forcing long balls into target man Emile Heskey inside the Liverpool area. A goalmouth scramble ensued from one of the lofted balls as Liverpool struggled to clear their lines early on.

Liverpool began to show their quality as Jordan Henderson and Philippe Coutinho both troubled goalkeeper Bogdan with shots from outside the area. Bolton captain Matt Mills was booked after ten minutes for a foul on Raheem Sterling, while referee Kevin Friend delivered the same punishment to Josh Vela minutes later as he dragged Joe Allen to the floor.

Coutinho had pulled up with what looked like a hamstring injury following a challenge early on in the half, however played on and appeared to shrug off the knock as the game continued.

Bolton went very close to going ahead on 32 minutes, as a Dean Moxey strike whistled past the post. The wing back ran on to a loose ball on the edge of the Liverpool area but his left-footed strike couldn't beat Simon Mignolet. Liverpool followed this up by attacking down the right side, and saw Glen Johnson's effort saved by Bogdan.

Bolton almost had a chance to steal a lead just before half-time when Mignolet chested down a long ball, before delaying the pass as Eidur Gudjohnsen almost stole the ball off him. Mignolet eventually managed to shuffle the ball to French centre-back Mamadou Sakho, as the sides went into the break at 0-0.

Brendan Rodgers saw fit to make a change at the interval, bringing on Serbian forward Lazar Markovic for Jose Enrique in an attack-minded change. It was Enrique's first start since the UEFA Champions League game against Basel in December, where he was also taken off; easing his way back into the first-team set-up following persistent injuries of late.

Markovic made an early impact as he ran on to a diagonal ball by Henderson and went down under contact from Mills. Much to the disbelief of Rodgers and the Liverpool home supporters, the referee signalled for no penalty. The resulting replay did show that the decision may have well been wrong, however the challenge was also outside of the box and therefore would have only warranted a free-kick.

Upping the momentum, Coutinho played a precise ball through to Sterling, however, Bogdan was alert as he raced out of his goal to easily block the Golden Boy's attempt on-goal. Sterling again came close soon after as he ran into the Bolton penalty area, seeing his shot blocked out for a corner-kick.

Liverpool continued to pressurise, and came close as Coutinho's long-range shot was well saved by Bogdan before Dean Moxey's slip gifted the ball to Javier Manquillo, who could only see his volley slice wide of the mark.

Neil Lennon and Brendan Rodgers both decided to flex their tactical muscles, as Conor Wilson replaced former Red Emile Heskey, whilst Lucas Leiva and Fabio Borini came on for Joe Allen and Javier Manquillo in the Liverpool dugout. Borini almost had the perfect start, as he was played in on goal however Bogdan was again to the rescue, the Hungarian making a superb save to keep Liverpool at bay as well as keeping his clean sheet intact.

The Trotters saw a couple of rare chances come and go, as Gudjohnsen fired wide and then over after being presented with two snapshot opportunities. Then came a proud moment for Jay Spearing, as the Liverpool academy graduate came on in the 70th minute. There was applause from both sets of fans for Spearing, who replaced skipper Mills.

As Liverpool pressed for a winner there were once again penalty shouts at the Kop end, with Henderson and Adam Lallana exchanging passes as the former went down under a challenge from Spearing. Once again, nothing was given by Kevin Friend - much to the frustration of the hosts who had felt hard done by, their goal-scoring opportunities had gone to waste. Bolton's Darren Pratley was booked with around five minutes to go after fouling Johnson on the right-hand side, however nothing came of Henderson's resulting free-kick.

Liverpool once again came close as Fabio Borini's header flashed wide of the goal, but Bolton did just enough to hold the Reds to a stalemate and set up a replay at the Reebok. Who will prevail, in the replay? Bolton may have a slight advantage, being at home, but Liverpool know how to get the job done, although they have been accused of inconsistencies all season.
