Liverpool Football Club are understood to be nursing fears that striker Daniel Sturridge is set for another lengthy injury.

The 25-year-old striker has been forced to drop out of international duty after sustaining a hip injury during his side's 2-1 loss with Manchester United, in which he scored the Reds' goal in the 69th minute.

After receiving scan results, Sturridge appears to have torn his hip muscle and medical staff at the Premier League club fear he could be out for up to a month with the injury.

It comes as the latest in a long line of setbacks this season for Sturridge. The ex-Chelsea and Manchester City forward spent five months of the campaign out after initially injuring his thigh, before twice breaking down in training whilst on the cusp of a return, once due to a reoccurence of the same injury and again with a calf problem.

The English international, who has played in just 11 of Liverpool's 30 Barclays' Premier League games this season, looks set to miss a crunch clash away at Arsenal on 4 April, but could also miss an FA Cup quarter-final replay away at Blackburn Rovers later the same week, amongst other games.

England boss Roy Hodgson said: "I’m a little bit disappointed for Daniel Sturridge, because when he came to us he didn’t really feel that the slight problem he felt was really any problem at all.

"When we did the scan and it turned out that there was a problem he was absolutely devastated because he didn’t want to leave us.

"There was no option because he has a slight tear and you can’t play through that."

Sturridge's injury causes yet more problems for Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers, who already has to reshuffle his squad after Martin Skrtel and Steven Gerrard were both issued with three-match bans via a red card and a violent conduct charge, both for incidents of stamping.

Meanwhile, Raheem Sterling is also expected to return to Melwood early. The 20-year-old is likely to feature in England's Euro 2016 tie against Lithuania, but could travel back to Merseyside after playing with a toe injury in recent weeks.
