Ex-Liverpool goalkeeper Pepe Reina has "no regrets" over leaving the club for Bayern Munich.

Reina spent nine successful years at the club after being brought in by Rafael Benitez, whom he joined up with at Napoli on a season-long loan in 2013 - but he left Merseyside permanently last summer after no assurance of first-team football under Brendan Rodgers.

Despite only making his first league appearance for Pep Guardiola's side in a 4-0 win away at Werder Bremen recently, the Spanish goalkeeper believes that he made the right decision to make the move - insisting it would have been a similar story at Anfield, where he would have been Simon Mignolet's understudy.

Talking to TalkSport, Reina said: "I think I was not going to play regular football if I had stayed. It's one of those. There’s no time for regrets.

"It’s about looking forward and being happy about what I achieved in my career at Liverpool and have a great day Sunday and say goodbye to all those fans that loved me at Liverpool for many years.

"It’s a great club (Bayern Munich), a good city with good people and we are looking forward to winning every trophy. So far so good.

"Life could have been better by playing more games but that is a goalkeepers life. I have to be patient and work harder."

Reina makes the return to Anfield this Sunday for the All-Star charity match, organised by the Liverpool FC Foundation and admits he has been keeping a close eye on the Reds since leaving, revealing he watched last weekend's disappointing loss at the hands of Manchester United.

Rodgers' side fell to a 2-1 defeat that leaves them five points off of fourth in the league, but the Spanish stopper is hoping that Steven Gerrard can make amends for his error - after he was sent off for allowing the heat of the moment to get to him.

"He made a mistake in a big game," Reina said. "If anyone feels these kind of games deeply on his heart it’s Stevie.

"Probably he would have like to say goodbye in a Man United game in a different way but he’s still got a few games and hopefully they can finish at Wembley in a cup final and it won’t be too bad.

"They have been several years without the top four. Last year they were close to winning the (Premier League) trophy and everyone was waiting for this year to be like the last.

"They spent a lot of money and everyone was expecting more. The first part of the season wasn’t great but they’ve had a better second half and hopefully they can make it."
