Liverpool midfielder Joao Carlos Teixeira has been recalled to the club after breaking his leg in action for Brighton and Hove Albion against Huddersfield Town on Tuesday.

The young midfielder was stretchered off during the 0-0 draw, and his loan spell with Brighton was brought to an end after scans at Brighton's Royal County Sussex Hospital confirmed that the Portugese playmaker had broken his leg, just above the right ankle.

The 22-year-old has only made one first team appearance for the Reds, but was enjoying a successful spell with Brighton, having scored six goals in 27 Sky Bet Championship starts and established himself as one of the club's top players. He'll now receive extensive treatment for the injury, which rules him out for the remainder of the season, back on Merseyside under the watchful eye of Liverpool's medical staff.

Brighton manager Chris Hughton thanked Teixeira for his time at the club, saying, "Our thoughts are with Joao - as this is a real blow to him after such a good season for the club - and we all wish him a speedy recovery and return to action.

"He's been an important player for the club this season, both before and after I came to the club, and I would like to thank him for his efforts during his time on loan here, and also Liverpool for allowing him to come."
