Jordan Henderson believes the pain of losing the 2012 FA Cup final will be firmly in his mind on Sunday afternoon.

The Reds take on Aston Villa in the semi-finals, their first visit to Wembley Stadium since a 2-1 loss to Roberto Di Matteo's side.

But now the Liverpool vice-captain is primed to avenge that loss under the arch three years ago, and he insists that the incentive of giving Steven Gerrard an emotional farewell to his Liverpool career only adds to his desire.

"I always think of losing the FA Cup final rather than winning the League Cup in 2012," Henderson said.

"Setbacks like that inspire you to want more. You tend to remember the ones you lose more.

"The final against Chelsea always sticks out for me and to put that right would be fantastic.

"We need to concentrate on the semi-final. If we keep doing what we’ve been doing I’m sure we’ll get a good result."

34-year-old Gerrard returns to the squad since a straight sending off against Manchester United resigned him to a three-game suspension,

Whilst talk has been banned of it in the dressing room, Gerrard's final game is currently a Premier League game away at Stoke City - but the FA Cup final, on May 30th, falls on his 35th birthday and could be his final appearance before the skipper leaves for LA Galaxy, should the Reds beat Villa to reach it.

"It would be perfect for him really," Henderson continued.

"But it’s no good dreaming that. As players we have go out there on the pitch and do the business.

"That’s the big motivation, not only doing it for ourselves and the club because we want to win trophies, but also because Stevie has given so much to this club. For us to win it for him in his final year would be really special.

"But it’s not just going to happen. We have to go out there and put in good performances and work hard for each other. If we do that we’ll have a really good chance."

Henderson, at just 24 years of age, is one of the more experienced members of Brendan Rodgers' team - having been in Kenny Dalglish's starting side on their visit to Wembley three years ago.

But the Sunderland-born midfielder insists the Reds' youth will not let them down in London on Sunday - insisting the confidence and momentum of Monday's win over Newcastle could prove a vital boost.

"I think the Newcastle game was important for us," Henderson told LFCTV.

"We knew we needed to win to get us back on track in the league in the final push for the top four and give us confidence ahead of the weekend.

"We’ve got young players but I feel as though there’s lots of personality and character in these players.

"I’ve been fortunate enough to play at Wembley a few times for Liverpool and England as well.

"It’s a special place. I know they will love it and embrace the atmosphere and step up to the level we know they can. It’s a big game but we are ready for it.

"Villa have been doing very well of late, and having won away to Spurs they will be high on confidence and wanting to cause an upset. We need to be careful about that."
