Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard offered a damning assessment of his side's meek performance in their 2-1 loss to Aston Villa in the FA Cup semi-finals.

The 34-year-old would have been hoping to reach the final to move a step closer to ending his Liverpool career with silverware in not only his final game, but on his 35th birthday.

But goals from Christian Benteke and Fabian Delph resigned the Reds to their fate despite Philippe Coutinho's opener on the half-hour mark.

Brendan Rodgers' side never really got going, as they struggled to match the enthusiasm and energy of Villa's midfield, and Gerrard admitted they deserved to lose.

"We didn't play today, we looked very nervous for some reason," said the skipper, speaking to TalkSPORT after the Wembley disappointment.

"We're a team that's built on passing and playing it quickly but we were very disappointing in that aspect and they were much better than us.

"We were very disappointing. I thought Aston Villa were much better than us today and that's the overriding feeling after the game."

The defeat means Gerrard has just six league games left of his Anfield career - starting with a trip to West Brom next weekend.

The Reds are looking to keep pace with Manchester City, who sit in fourth-place, seven points ahead having played an extra game.

Gerrard's final Liverpool game will now be against Stoke City at the Britannia Stadium on May 24, a game which is likely to be largely meaningless for both sides.
