Former Liverpool player Dirk Kuyt has confessed that he would urge reported Liverpool transfer target Memphis Depay to join the Reds, rather than make a proposed move to deadly rivals Manchester United.

Depay, a 21-year-old left winger, has rose to fame over the past couple of years thanks to some glittering performances for his club PSV Eindhoven in the Eredvisie. He is likened to Real Madrid superstar Cristiano Ronaldo, and tops the Dutch league' scoring charts this season with 21 goals. It is rumoured that it would cost over £20million to prize him away from Holland, but it could be a risk worth taking if Liverpool can prize him away from Manchester United's grasp and into L4.

Ex-Red Kuyt played alongside Depay in last summer's FIFA World Cup for Holland, under the management of current United manager Louis Van Gaal, but Kuyt thinks a move to Merseyside would be better for the talented youngster.

“I look through red glasses because I played six years for Liverpool," Kuyt said. "Only when Memphis does that will be realise just how big Liverpool are. Of course it would be an advantage at Manchester United because he knows the manager. On the other hand it is important at his age that he plays every week. That's the only way he can develop.”
