Burnley centre-back Michael Keane has admitted his confidence in former teammate Danny Ings by backing him to succeed at Liverpool.

The Reds confirmed that they had reached a deal with the relegated Clarets earlier this week, with Ings set to join the Merseyside club after his contract runs out at Turf Moor on July 1.

Liverpool will still have to agree a fee for the striker, having had a £4 million offer turned down for the 22-year-old and if they cannot come to a conclusion - Brendan Rodgers and co. will be forced to pay compensation via an independent tribunal.

Keane, an England Under-21 international alongside Ings in Czech Republic later this month, believes he has earned such a big move.

"I am really happy for him because Liverpool is obviously a massive club and I think he deserves it," said Keane.

"I'm a bit gutted to see him go. He is a great guy as well as a brilliant footballer, but there's no doubt that I'm happy for him. He’s got a great move."

Ex-United defender reveals Ings' excitement

Keane, who made the permanent move from Manchester United to Burnley mid-way through last season, admitted Ings - who scored 11 goals in 35 Barclays Premier League appearances last season - was "buzzing" after the move was announced and that the striker is "really excited" to don the red shirt.

He added: "There are probably a few nerves there but they will go straight away when he joins them because he is a quality player."

"Just look at how many goals he scored for Burnley last season in a team that, with all due respect, is not as good as Liverpool."

Asked whether he believed Ings could make a real first-team impact on Merseyside, the defender continued: "If he plays regularly at Liverpool then he’s going to get more chances, and yes, I think he’ll do well.

"He just needs to get his first goal to get off the mark and then he will start flying."
