Martin Skrtel has put pen to paper on a new contract at Liverpool after turning down the advances of Serie A side Inter Milan, his agent has revealed.

The Slovakian, soon to be entering the final year of his contract, cast doubt over his future after initially rejecting a new deal earlier this month - describing the club's offer as "unacceptable" and one that did not respect his worth.

The 30-year-old's proposed deal is understood to have included performance-based terms, which he did not deem reasonable, but after the Reds put an improved offer on the table - Skrtel has dismissed interest from Roberto Manicini's Inter to sign a new deal which will see him stay at Anfield for the forseeable future.

Skrtel's agent, Karol Csonto, said: "I must admit that they were not just rumours, the interest from Inter was real. The deal did not go ahead but there was contact made.

"Martin had been thinking about his future, but eventually opted to remain at Liverpool."

Skrtel remains integral player on Merseyside

The defender is still seen as an important player in the Reds' side, having started 48 of Liverpool’s 58 matches last season, and is likely to retain a key role in Brendan Rodgers' side due to his wealth of experience.

Slovakian captain Skrtel has made 293 appearances and scored 17 goals since arriving in 2008 from Russian side Zenit St Petersburg.

Skrtel's new deal comes is a significant boost for the Reds, who have already completed three transfers so far this summer as they look to complete deals for Joe Gomez and Nathaniel Clyne.

Liverpool have also secured new deals for other important first-team players such as Daniel Sturridge, Philippe Coutinho, Jordan Henderson and Jordon Ibe in the last 12 months as they look to keep hold of their best players.
