Liverpool have officially announced the signing of Nathaniel Clyne for a fee of £12.5 million, making the full-back their sixth addition of the summer.

The 24-year-old put pen to paper on a five-year deal on Monday after successfully completing his medical to secure the switch from Southampton to Anfield.

Clyne - who had one year left on his contract at St Mary's - had already agreed personal terms with the Reds last week, but the two parties had to delay the deal's formal completion until he returned from his holiday in America.

The full-back now joins James Milner, Danny Ings, Adam Bogdan, Joe Gomez and Roberto Firmino - the first three of also officially became Liverpool players on July 1, after their existing contracts at their previous clubs ran out.

The addition of Clyne takes Brendan Rodgers' summer spending past £40 million, with the Reds still on the hunt for another striker - though they are prepared to wait to get their man, with Aston Villa's Christian Benteke still at the top of their list despite his £32.5 million release clause.

Clyne brought in to succeed Johnson in right-back role

England international Clyne arrives at Liverpool after it was initially thought that he was close to a move to rivals Manchester United, but after Louis van Gaal withdrew his interest in the right-back in lure of other targets, the Reds were able to enter negotiations with the South Coast club.

Having earmarked Clyne as the perfect replacement for the recently released Glen Johnson, Liverpool's initial offer, thought to be in the region of £10 million, was turned down but their improved offer has since forced Southampton to reluctantly do business.

Clyne has spent the last three years in the Premier League with Southampton, making 94 appearances and scoring three goals, and adds some much-needed quality in the right-back slot, with Jon Flanagan out until at least the start of 2016, whilst Andre Wisdom is still seen as back-up despite his loan spell at West Bromwich Albion last season.
