Brendan Rodgers is hoping that his Liverpool team have put the dismal disappointments of the 2014-15 season past them after getting their pre-season underway on Tuesday night.

A comprehensive 4-0 victory over the True Thai Premier League All Stars in Bangkok saw the Reds get their tour in the Far East and Australia off in style.

And as the Merseyside outfit prepare for their Premier League curtain-raiser on August 9 away at Stoke City, Rodgers believes last season is now a distant memory.

"We're hoping to develop a team that can go on and cope with the demands of next season," said the Ulsterman when asked about the objectives over the next month.

"The door has now closed on last season. We've moved on, and I've been really pleased with the quality and importantly the work of the players already.

"For us, if we're going to progress then it is going to be as a team and a lot of our work will be done on our team and our spirit because we've brought in the quality [we needed] this summer."

Rodgers pleased with his side's performances

Five of the six Liverpool summer signings got a run out on Tuesday evening, with only Roberto Firmino - still on his holidays - not having taken part.

With the squad set for a further two weeks travelling and taking part in warm-up games ahead of the coming campaign, Rodgers is hoping his side will gel further.

"We played with two different teams in each half and I thought both sides played very, very well," he said, after being asked to assess Liverpool's performance in Bangkok.

"The first half, in terms of the heat and humidity, and the second half conditions [the rain] were difficult, but I thought over the two halves they played very well.

"The Thailand team is a very difficult game for us but I was very pleased with the performance and the fitness levels."

"There were a few elements [that we were looking for] tonight. The first one, obviously, was to develop the fitness of the players.

"We have only been back just over a week and we've been working very hard but of course when you go into a game situation, particularly in the heat, it's a big test for the players."

But fitness was not the only concern, the Liverpool boss continued - as he revealed that he used the fixture to analyse the Reds' tactical efficiency.

"Secondly, tactically, we were looking to find something from the game tonight," he added.

"The first 20 minutes of each half we played with a high press to really force the game and in the second half of each half, we looked to defend in a medium-to-low block.

"These are the challenges that we'll find throughout our Premier League season. [There are] times when [you have] to press high, particularly at home, and then [there are also times]away from home when you have to defend with a medium to low block. I thought the players adjusted and adapted very well to that."

Rodgers and co. immediately fly out to Australia

Having opened their pre-season campaign with an encouraging victory, the Reds now move on to Australia - where they will face Brisbane Roar and Adelaide United in the space of a few days.

Rodgers admitted his excitement at getting to see the waves of Liverpool support down under after their welcoming in Thailand, despite the lengthy travelling their tour entails.

"When we come here to Thailand we always get a wonderful reception," Rodgers stated. "We enjoy the kindness of everyone. Tonight we'll fly to Brisbane and that will be another different experience, but also a great experience.

"[When we were] in Melbourne a few years ago, we played in front of nearly 100,000 people. There is not too many clubs that have that pull and that support.

"Of course, it's a demanding pre-season with lots of travelling but we are looking to maximise what we can out of each country, each training session and each game.

"Come the beginning of the season we'll be in a really good footballing condition to start the season."
