Brendan Rodgers admitted that he has "an idea" of who he might announce as Liverpool's new vice-captain after praising the Reds' new skipper Jordan Henderson.

The midfielder was handed the armband permanently earlier this month, promoting him from second in command to Steven Gerrard's successor - but his former role is still open.

With the likes of Martin Skrtel, Mamadou Sakho and James Milner linked with the vice-captaincy, the Northern Irishman conceded that he has thought about who he may give it to - despite keeping quiet on who that might actually be.

The Liverpool boss said that he hasn't announced anything yet, or even spoke to the players about the matter, but that he has "got an idea on who I'd want that to be" with the start of their Premier League campaign less than two weeks away.

Rodgers' side will be led into the season by a new skipper for the first time since 2004, when Gerrard had replaced Sami Hyypia as club captain a few months prior - and he admitted it was a fairly simple decision to hand the captaincy to Henderson.

The manager admitted that he had had the decision in his mind last season after Gerrard announced he would be leaving for Los Angeles Galaxy, and said he aimed to find a "great ambassador on and off the field" due to the "huge responsibility for the players and the supporters on a worldwide basis."

Liverpool boss insists Henderson will thrive as captain

Rodgers further added that he looked for key attributes such as a "strong mentality" and someone who is "strong-willed" and a "wonderful role model" for the role.

He cited Henderson's growth and development since being handed the vice-captaincy as what made him "pretty sure" the Sunderland-born 25-year-old was the right man for the job.

And having led the Reds as skipper in their four pre-season clashes so far, the Liverpool manager is pleased with Henderson's early work as captain, insisting that he has "taken to the role very well."

He hailed the help of Gerrard, who Henderson was on the shoulder of last year to "see how it all works" - though, as the midfielder has said himself, Rodgers added that Henderson will be looking to do it in his own unique way.

Rodgers, who goes into his fourth campaign as Liverpool manager this year after surviving an intense end-of-season review over the summer, revealed that he told Henderson to have his own ideas and own ways of doing things.

He added that Henderson is "an outstanding player" who will "blossom with the captaincy."
